Donald Shankle Obituary

Donald "Donnie" Wayne Shankle, 74, of Frederick, Maryland, passed away at home with his wife and daughter by his side, on October 10, 2025. Born on December 4, 1950, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Irving John Henry Shankle Jr. and Mabel Louise (Cook) Shankle.

Donnie is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Sandra "Marie" (Bowman) Shankle, and his devoted daughter, Megan Elizabeth Shankle. He is also survived by his sister Nancy Smith and husband Richard of Frederick, MD and brothers Lewis William Shankle and wife Susan of Mt. Airy, MD; Kenneth Shankle and wife of Pennsylvania; and Lawrence Shankle of Walkersville, MD. He leaves behind a large and loving extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He is also remembered fondly by Megan's mother, Terrie Oakley and her late husband Charlie Oakley, who he was grateful Megan had as her bonus Dad, and many cherished friends - especially Jim Hardy and wife Judy, and Jimmy Knill and wife Brenda.

In addition to his parents, Donnie was preceded in death by his brother Irving John Henry Shankle III and his lifelong friend of 50 years, Pierce "Sonny" Stine.

Donnie began his career as a bricklayer before proudly serving his country in the United States Army. Following his military service, he joined the Frederick City Police Department, where he served with dedication for 22 years before retiring.

Retirement, however, never slowed him down. Donnie went on to work as an electrician for Ercole Electric for another 12 years before officially retiring at age 60 - ready to enjoy his favorite hobbies.

For 28 years, Donnie gave generously of his time and expertise through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs, helping hundreds of seniors file their taxes free of charge. Even during his illness, Donnie remained determined to complete as many returns as possible, taking great pride in accomplishing that goal.

A proud 47-year member of the Francis Scott Key American Legion Post 11 in Frederick, Donnie was also part of the Legion Riders. Beyond his service, he was happiest on his motorcycle or out fishing - passions he pursued as often as possible. He also cherished his monthly lunches with fellow retired officers, swapping stories and laughter at the Elks Lodge.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Allen Missoi, Dr. Jonathan Marx, the nurses and technicians of Interventional Radiology at Frederick Health Hospital, Dr. Ali Husain and Kelly Hausenbauer, PA, at Frederick Gastroenterology Associates, and Linda Muehl his primary care doctor, for their compassionate care and support throughout Donnie's illness.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 1st at 11:30 a.m. at the American Legion FSK Post 11, 1450 Taney Avenue, Frederick, MD. Guests are encouraged to come as Donnie would have liked - in a favorite t-shirt, sweatshirt, and jeans - and to bring a story to share. A light lunch will be served for those who attend.

Arrangements are with Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick. Expressions of sympathy may be offered to the family at StaufferFuneralHome.com. Donald "Donnie" Wayne Shankle
