Franklin Joy Obituary

Franklin R. Joy, age 88, of Frederick, died Wednesday, December 7, 2022 at his home after an extended illness. He was the husband of 66 years to Eileen B. (Redmond) Joy.

Born February 4, 1934 in Libertytown, he was the son of the late James Raymond and Helen (Trundle) Joy. He was the last of his immediate family.

Besides his wife, he is survived by children Janice M. Waesche (Randy) and Cheryl A. Palmer (Stephen) both of Thurmont, Susan E. Cooney (Mike) of Jupiter, FL and Patrick F. Joy of Keysville; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Mr. Joy was a 1952 graduate of St. John's High School. He was a proud veteran and served in the US Army, including a time in Germany.

He was retired from both the Maryland State Highway Administration and the United States Postal Service. Following retirement he enjoyed driving veterans to the VA Center in Martinsburg for many years.

He was a member of St. John the Evangelist and Saint Katherine Drexel Catholic Church, AMVETS Post 2, BPOE Lodge 684, and FSK American Legion Post 11, all of Frederick; Eighth Air Force Historical Society; and Sons of the American Revolution. Besides maintaining a few large collections, he had a great interest in genealogy. His range of general knowledge was extensive and he frequently entertained all with detailed stories of times gone by.

He was predeceased by his brother James R. Joy Jr., and sisters Mary Emma McMillian and A. Matilda Ingram.

Friends may call at Hartzler Funeral Home-Libertytown, 11802 Liberty Rd., Frederick on Sunday, Dec. 11 from 3 to 6 p.m.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, Dec. 12 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church-Libertytown, which is located on Rt. 75 one block north of the Rt 26 intersection. Father Chuck Wible will be the celebrant. Military interment will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Martinsburg VAMC-Voluntary Service, 510 Butler Ave., Martinsburg, WV 25405, or to a charity of one's choice.
