Jack Linton Obituary

Mr. Jack Thomas Linton, 82, of Frederick, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010, while surrounded by family at the Northampton Manor Nursing Center. He was the husband of Betty Mae Thomas Linton, his wife of 62 years. Born Sept. 20, 1927, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Russell "Brownie" Herbert and Edith Marie Brandenburg Linton.

Mr. Linton was a 1944 graduate of Frederick High School and attended college for a year before entering the U.S. Navy. Mr. Linton served from 1945 until his honorable discharge in 1946 and had been assigned to the USS Rockbridge and later the USS Aventinus, both in the Pacific Theater of Operations.

He was a longtime member of Grace United Church of Christ, Frederick, where he served as superintendent, as a deacon and was always active with the church consistory. Mr. Linton was an insurance agent with Allstate Insurance for more than 37 years. Mr. Linton always enjoyed volunteering in the community and was active with the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary "Wings" for many years, and later was an active volunteer with the Alan P. Linton Jr. Emergency Shelter, which was established in honor of his grandson, who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New York City.

He and his wife enjoyed traveling for many years and since 1972 they maintained the Holdcraft obituary files published in The Frederick News-Post, which they updated, cataloged and sorted until his illness in June 2010.

In more recent years, Jack enjoyed farming and mowing around the former Thomas family farm on Ballenger Creek Pike. Jack, known for his smile and mild demeanor, was often found talking and meeting people throughout the community and was a loving father, grandfather and friend to all he would meet in this life.

He is survived by three sons, Alan Patrick "Pat" Linton and wife, Sharon Moss Linton, of Frederick, Jay Thomas Linton and wife, Vicki Wiles Linton, of Hagerstown, and Ron Curtis Linton and wife, Isobel Erquhart Linton, of Warrenton, Va.; seven grandchildren, Laura Renee Anspach and husband, David, Scott Patrick Linton, Jason Thomas Linton and wife, Dana, Joy Christine Essmyer and husband, Neil, Samuel Alexander Linton, Jack Thomas Linton and Fiona Marie Linton; six great-grandchildren, Benjamin David and William David Anspach, Jacob Thomas Linton, Jeffrey Thomas Linton, Jay Thomas "JJ" Linton and Salem Micah Essmyer. He is also remembered by two cousins, Glenn Brandenburg and wife, Shigeho, of Warrenton, and Shirley Green Crampton and husband, Keefer, of Frederick. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Alan Patrick Linton Jr.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, at Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 16, from Grace United Church of Christ, 25 E. Second St., Frederick. His pastor, the Rev. Dr. Joseph Foster, will officiate. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Grace United Church of Christ, 25 E. Second St., Frederick; or to the Alan P. Linton Jr. Emergency Shelter, 27 DeGrange St., Frederick, MD 21701.
