Mark Wait Obituary

Mr. Mark Alton Wait, 71, of 378 Sylvan Drive, Stuarts Draft, Va., where he lived since 1997, a former resident of Frederick from 1969 to 1996, died Saturday, Jan. 9, at Augusta Medical Center, Fishersville, Va.

He was the husband of Donna Wait of Stuarts Draft.

Born Feb. 25, 1927, in Minnesota, he was a son of the late Chauncy F. and Alice Ostlund Wait.

He graduated from Gallaudet University in 1951.

Mr. Wait worked at a newspaper and commercial publication specialty in Washington, D.C. for nine years. He worked as a graphic arts teacher and basketball coach at the Colorado School for the Deaf for a number of years.

In 1972, he became assistant principal at the Career and Technology education program at the Maryland School for the Deaf, Frederick, after receiving a master's from California University of Northridge in 1972.

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Southeast Athletic Association as a basketball player.

Mr. Wait was instrumental in founding the Free Chapter of Gallaudet University Alumni Association, and was elected the first president of the chapter.

His memberships included several state associations of the deaf, National Fraternal Society of the Deaf and Frederick County Services for the Deaf.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, Michael Wait of Cedar Hill, Texas, Gerald Wait of Waterloo, Iowa, and Eduardo Saltelli of Fairfax, Va.; three daughters, Barbara Wait of Dallas, Texas, Melissa Wait of Stuarts Draft, and Diana Pruett of Raysal, W.Va.; three sisters, Lois Cronk of Detroit Lakes, Minn, Beth Jacobs of Reno, Nev., and Vonna Jahner of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and seven grandchildren.

Mr. Wait was preceded in death by one son, Conrad Wait; and one brother, Roger Alan Wait.

The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at McDow Funeral Home, 1701 W. Main St., Waynesboro, Va., where funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Rev. James A. Harris, of Fishersville United Methodist Church, will officiate.

Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Waynesboro, Va.
