Sofia Hanson Obituary

Sofia Hansen, beloved daughter of Lisa Minichiello and Paul Hansen, died in San Francisco, CA. She was born in Washington, DC and lived most of her life in Middletown, MD, and most recently in Stafford, VA.

Sofia graduated high school with top honors in only three years. She was an exceptional writer, exuberant dancer, and enthusiastic thespian. She loved animals so much that at the age of 10 she became a vegetarian. She participated in diverse activities throughout her life, including volunteering on behalf of environmental causes, human rights, and animal welfare. Some of her happiest times were spent performing with the Washington Revels and biking and swimming in Chincoteague, VA. She was adventurous, loved amusement park rides and spent a happy summer in Quebec, and enjoyed writing poetry in Portland, Oregon as a participant in the Lewis and Clark Creative Writing Workshop. She tried her hand at everything from Chinese to cheerleading, and Model United Nations to gymnastics to acting Shakespeare. Wherever she went, Sofia would go for long walks, listening to music, and she was instantly recognizable even a mile away from her distinctive gait.

Sofia is survived by her parents, her sisters, Lucy and Samantha, and her stepmother, Beth. She is also survived by her grandparents, Marcia and Kent Minichiello, Kathleen Marshall (Jack), and Jerry Hansen (Anna), her great-grandmothers Marian Bainton and Marian Wilhelm, her uncles Alfred Minichiello and Jim Hansen, as well as dear cousins and other relatives. She will also be deeply missed by best friend, Maddy Loveless and her family who were like a second family to her, and by her friends Letty and Mac MacDonald.

The family suggests that In lieu of flowers, you may wish to memorialize Sofia by supporting the Washington Revels or a local animal protection society. Friends and family are invited to a celebration of her life that will be held in the spring around her birthday.

Sofi-pie, So-birdy, Precious Blue: our hearts are broken. You gave us joy. We love you infinitely and eternally.

I am her sister Samantha, she died when I was only 4 but I hold such dear memories of her, For example she would always pat my head and say "oh Scootie" as scootie as always been my nickname. She always loved dancing and reading. Sofia, if you see this in heaven you will be dearly missed and you are such a beutiful soul and a wonderful person I will always love you- Scootie

I am so sorry to hear the news about Sofia and offer my condolences to all of Sofia's family and friends. She was a wonderful girl who brought such an energy to class. Nobody was more sweet, kind, and willing to help anybody.

When I received a gracious email from her last year, it brought a smile to my face because I could hear her voice in the writing talking about working at the Boys & Girls Club, feeling like a teacher. I am sure she was a wonderful role model for the kids.

Sofia, thank you for all the inspiration and good you gave this world. You will be always be missed.

I am so sorry for this loss. I didn't know Sofia, personally, just through a Facebook group. She was a beautiful person with a beautiful soul. There is a video, she shared, of her dancing. She seemed so outgoing in it. My heart broke to hear of her passing. I have no real words of comfort. I wish I did and I'm sorry that I don't. All I can do is keep you all in my thoughts and prayers, as you navigate this painful time.

Love and light!

Never had the chance of meeting you in person, but just they way your mom lit up while speaking about you makes me know how great of a person you were. If only you could see how happy you made her. It always made my day seeing your mom come into my job and talk about you! It still makes my day seeing her come in. May God wrap his ever loving arms around your family and friends through this hard time. You will surely be missed.
