William Jefferies Obituary

William Douglas "Bill" Jefferies died peacefully with his wife Kathryn by his side, at their home in Thurmont, Maryland, on the afternoon of April 15th.

Bill was born in Buena Vista, Virginia on July 2, 1928, the son of Emma and Ernest Jefferies. After serving in the US Army 1946-48, Bill studied broadcasting at RCA Institutes in New York City, then worked at radio station WREL in Lexington, Virginia. Dan Weinberg brought Bill to Maryland to manage his new Hiway Drive-in Theater in Hagerstown. There, Bill met the love of his life, Sarah Kathryn Baker, and they were married just before Christmas in 1952.

Bill and Kathryn moved their young family to Lynchburg, Virginia and operated the Colonial Restaurant and Motel with Blll's brother Robert. In 1960, they returned to Maryland, where Bill managed the snack bar at the new Terrace Lanes bowling Alley in Frederick. Bill soon opened the successful Town & Country Restaurant in the brick building on the hilltop corner of Patrick Street and Catoctin Avenue in Frederick.

In 1968, Bill built the Red Horse Steak House, along with business partner David Weinberg. The Red Horse quickly became a dining institution in Frederick. Bill operated the Red Horse for three decades, as well as the Red Horse Motor Inn next door.

Bill and Kathryn retired to Florida full-time by 2010, then returned to live in Frederick County in 2014.

Bill is survived by wife Kathryn, son Richard, brother James; grandchildren Andrew, Emma and Kerry Jefferies of Virginia and Jake and Nina of New York; and a sweet new great-granddaughter Juliet Hannah Jefferies. He was pre-decreased by son William Douglas, Jr. and brothers Robert, Charles and Elwood.

A celebration of Bill's life is planned for late Summer.
