Richard Dale Brostad was born Oct. 26, 1950, in Fairfax Mo., to Byam and Margaret Jeppeson Brostad. He attended elementary school in Omaha and in 1961 his family moved to Waterloo. He graduated from Waterloo in 1968. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps before graduation and shortly after found himself on the way to Camp Pendleton and on to Vietnam. Rich was a machine gunner and obtained the rank of sergeant before leaving the Corps. "Once a Marine Always a Marine" and Rich was proof of that. Dennis Clark and Mike Meadows were his lifelong Marine brothers. Rich received a degree in welding from Metro Tech Community College, however, he spent most of his working life as a machinist and manufacturing supervisor. He spent many years at Valmont and Vickers Corp. in Omaha. He retired from AccuCut in Fremont in 2005.
In 1974, he married Karen Christie at Our Saviors Baptist Church in Elkhorn. Karen and Rich were blessed with two daughters and one granddaughter. They raised the girls in Arlington. Rich was a member of the Arlington Fire Dept., American Legion, Marine Corps League and Grace United Methodist Church in Kennard. Rich was an outdoors man and loved hunting and fishing, cooking bar-b-que and a cold Budweiser. But the best thing of all was being Taylor's Papa.
