Aaron Epperly Obituary

Aaron Ray Epperly passed away October 9, 2025 in Monterey, California surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness. He was born on October 6, 1941 in Fresno, California to Lewis Ray and Nina Fay Epperly.

Aaron grew up in Caruthers, California and graduated from Caruthers High in 1960. He attended Fresno City College where he played on the baseball team. Before graduation, he was drafted and spent two years in the army at Fort Hood in Texas, where he made lifelong friends. After being discharged he returned to Fresno and continued his education at Fresno State College, graduating with a degree in Radio and TV production. He worked for Retlaw Broadcasting at KJEO TV as a news photographer for many years. After retirement, he embarked on a second career at age 50 as a Fresno County Deputy Sheriff. He won an award for "Most Inspirational" in his Academy class, competing with much younger people.

Aaron also had a passion for auto racing. He was a crew member of Ray Elder's "Racing Farmers" NASCAR team from Caruthers. Ray and his team were six time Winston Western Grand National Champions.

Aaron was a true sports fan and especially enjoyed playing golf with friends at San Joaquin Country Club and with his life partner Diane Emerson at Monterey Peninsula Country Club.

Aaron was filled with enthusiasm and zest for life. He was a unique man who will be greatly missed.

Aaron was pre-deceased by wife Linda Berkholtz Epperly. He is survived by his loving partner, Diane Emerson, brothers Jim and Mitch, sister-in-laws Pat Epperly and Nancie Pace as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

At Aaron's request no formal services will be held. Please honor Aaron's memory in your own way.

Diane---I miss Aaron from across the street yelling " hi, Judy!". He was a great neighbor!! He planted a garden every summer and would always share his tomatoes and zuchinni with everyone! One day he had a huge one that had he had missed and was going to throw it away. I told him I would love to have it. He said " what are you going to do with it?" I told him "you'll see!!" A couple days later I invited him over for dinner. I had stuffed it with a meat and rice mixture and baked it. He Loved it, as he did any kind of food you would put in front of him!!! From then on-- he would give me his overgrown veges!! He is sorely missed. My prayers are with you---Judy Carmichael

We worked together at KJEO back in 1978-79. Even when he got ticked off, he still seemed upbeat and cheerful. -Jerry Lane, retired news photographer, The Woodlands, TX

I worked with Aaron at KJEO and later in our lives enjoyed lunches with him and other KJEO alumni. He was a fun-loving, outgoing, "full of life" guy.
