Barclay Lew Obituary
April 12, 1951 - January 15, 2024
Honolulu, Hawaii - Dr. Barclay S. Lew, 72, passed away peacefully in Honolulu on Jan.15, 2024. Born in 1951 to Phyllis and Chester Lew in Fresno, CA, he graduated from Fresno H.S. in 1969 and received a bachelor's in math/engineering at UC Santa Barbara, and a master's/Ph.D. in science and engineering from UCLA. During his career, he worked at SCE (San Onofre) and PG&E (Diablo Canyon), overseeing the full power licensing of Diablo Canyon. He also consulted with the U.S. Dept. of Energy, Lawrence Berkeley Natl Laboratory, Rocky Flats, and Hanford before retiring in 2019 at DOE Headquarters. Barclay will be remembered as a bon vivant who was passionate, generous, brilliant, and incredibly fun. He adored his cat and enjoyed playing tennis, BBQing ribs and brisket, and cooking meals for homeless shelters. He is survived by wife Shari Nakakura; children Tim, Jayci, and Tiara Lew; Mother Phyllis Lew (predeceased by Chester Lew), grandchildren Carter and Frankie; sister Sandy Lew; nieces Mandy Koontz and Jennifer Salgado (Ruben) and grandnephew/grandniece Joey and Jackie.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, May 18, 10 a.m. at First Chinese Baptist Church, 6080 N. Angus St., Fresno.

I had the pleasure of working with Barclay for several years at the Hanford site. He provided valuable insights into nuclear safety and was an asset to our project for safely handling spent nuclear fuel. He will be missed by many.

I was a classmate at Fresno High. I knew Barclay to always have a blinding twinkle in his eye. Am really saddened to hear of his passing.
