Cassie McMurray Obituary

Cassie Alvena Armey McMurray was born on September 3, 1917, in Three Hills, Alberta, Canada, to John and Alta Armey. She was the youngest of five children all of whom preceded her in death. When Cassie was seven years old the family moved to Fresno where she lived the rest of her life. She married the love of her life, Charles McMurray in 1945, after he returned from the south Pacific as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II. They had two children, Louis and Ann. Cassie was Bookkeeper and Office Manager for the Marion Nine Lumber Company located on the northeast corner of Clovis and Kings Canyon. She and her husband started the Charles McMurray Company in 1946. Her son Louis continues to operate the family owned wholesale hardware business today. She was active all of her life in the Community Brethren Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher and Superintendent of the Children's Department. She sang in the choir for 50 years, was president of the Women's Fellowship and helped prepare meals for many occasions. She quilted at the church for many years. She was a member and president of the Sunnyside Garden Club and a member of the Sunnyside Country Club. She gave many volunteer hours to the Community Hospital and to the San Joaquin Gardens Retirement Community where she resided until her death on Monday, August 13, 2007. Cassie was preceded in death by her husband Charles. She leaves her son Louis and his wife Dena; daughter, Ann McMurray Morgan and her husband Steve; five grandchildren, Kesley Johnston and her husband Bob, Charlie McMurray and his wife Amy, Jed McMurray, Allison Rasmussen, and Mitch Rasmussen; and two great-grandchildren, Mackay Morgan Armstrong, and Jamison McMurray. A Memorial Service will be held at San Joaquin Gardens Fellowship Hall on Saturday, August 18, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, those wishing, may send a contribution to the Endowment Fund at San Joaquin Gardens, 5555 Fresno Street, Fresno, Ca 93710. Alvina was a classic lady. She was a model of manners and a delightful fashion statement, as well. Mrs. McMurray will be missed by so many family members and so many young ones who are yet to be born. She will remain a special memory to Ryan and Holly Bauer, as well as myself.
