DON OREN Obituary

Don Oren passed away on Saturday June 25, 2016, at the the age of 92. A farm boy from Canton, SD, who at the age of 19 years old, enlisted in the United States Army and was a tank commander during the D-Day invasion of Normandy. He landed on Utah Beach and several days after D-Day, his tank was hit by a German 88mm projectile and burst into flames. After months in a hospital and rehab in England, he returned to the 746th Tank Battalion. He served four major campaigns, Normandy, the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the Purple Heart and four Bronze Stars. After the war, he graduated from University of South Dakota Law School. He worked as a legal Editor for West Publishing, clerked for Federal Judge Peirson Hall, assisting him in writing legal opinions. He practiced law in Fresno, CA, beginning in 1957. He earned the respect of his peers and was passionate about being an attorney for over 50 years. The biggest passion of his life was the love for his wife Isabel. After they met, they were inseparable for over 60 years. He stated his life without marriage would have been incomplete. He had two sons, Charlie and his wife Patricia, and Eric and his wife Jennifer. He has five grandchildren, Daniel, Michael, Chelsie, Taylor and Jenell. He loved his family dearly. He loved to camp and hike in the Sierras, more than Isabel did. They compromised by taking trips to the coast. He was a strong advocate for those he cared for. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him. A Memorial Service is to be planned in the future. If you would like to send condolences, please send any sentiements to Legacy.com. The Family would love to hear from you.

To Don Oren's family
Don appeared in my court a number of times over the years. I only knew him, Eric and Charlie professionally. Yet, in court, the character, honesty and integrity of a man can be readily measured. Don presented as a strong advocate for his clients, but without exaggeration or bullying. He was always well prepared. His points of law were ever trustworthy, an important feature for a judge trying to make a correct and just legal decision.
Only today did I learn of Don's passing. One of my first thoughts was this: that Don endowed his lawyer sons with his strong qualities of respect for the legal profession, loyalty to one's clients and honesty with the court and one's adversaries. Eric and Charlie reflect the best qualities of their dad. There can be no higher tribute to Don.
Please accept my condolences during this time of your grief.

From the LaBossiere Family-we just heard about Don's passing and are saddened for your loss. He was a good friend to Ted and Kaye and their family. After Ted passed away, Don provided immense assistance to Kaye (at no charge), for which she is very appreciative. They had a lot of fun times with Don and Isabelle playing cards and having dinners. Our thoughts are with you.

Charlie and the Oren family :
We offer our condolences on the passing of your father Don. I only met him a couple of times, but I remember him as a good man. The Heller family appreciates the opportunity offered my father to work in your father's law firm. Maybe the two of them will enjoy some fine legal discourse.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

To All of the Oren Family Members: Don appeared before me in Court on numerous occassions. He was ALWAYS prepared, tenacious, respectful and energetic---and frankly, he always prevailed. He was a superlative lawyer, and his presence both in and out of the courtroom enhanced the State Bar of California immensely. He was both a strong advocate and an example of what an advocate should be to younger lawyers who watched him at work. Please accept Kathy's and my thoughts and prayers at this very difficult time.

Dear Charlie and Patricia and Eric and Jennifer. We are so sorry for your loss. I only met your dad one time when I called him as a young attorney to ask him about his writings in the CEB book on Zoning and Land Use. Probably a very bothersome thing for an experienced lawyer like your dad, but he treated me with the utmost respect and attention. God bless your families.

Charlie and Eric Although I am saddened by Don's passing, I know you must be comforted by the memories of your Dad's full and rich life. You have my deepest sympathies and sincere condolences. Don was a fine guy and a very good lawyer. He exemplified the professionalism, honesty and integrity to which lawyers aspire. The profession needs more lawyers like Don. I was lucky to have worked with him on several occasions and he never failed to teach me something valuable. His legacy lives on in his sons. He will be missed.

Charlie , Eric and the entire family of Don. I'm sorry to hear of the passing of your father. I didn't know him as well as some of the guests here. What I did know of him was that he was a friendly, good man who raised two fine sons. Like someone else mentioned here I am particularly greatful for his service to the country and especially so on today the forth of July. Please accept my sympathies for your loss at this difficult time.

Our condolences to the Oren family. We have many fond memories of Don with Rabe Engineering. We enjoyed both him and Isabelle on several trips to the baseball games in SF and several dances with the Woodmen. Everyone enjoyed those all night poker games with Don and his clever sense of humor. Don and Isabelle were a charming couple and we were proud to have known them.

Charlie and Eric, I'm very sorry to hear of the passing of your Dad. As a very young lawyer I had one of my first actively litigated cases with him: Western Piper Sales v. Fred Rabe. He was a valient opponent, an aggressive advocate and a true gentleman. I'm sure he will be missed.
