EARL GILES Obituary

Earl Clinton Giles, Jr. passed away peacefully on March 15, 2017, at the age of 95, a few short months after losing his wife Helen. He was born in Fresno, CA, on August 15,1921, to Earl Sr., a railroad man from the Big Creek project, and Emily Giles, a nurse from Buffalo, NY. Earl was the younger, surviving brother of his sister, Esther Jane Hayhurst. Earl graduated from Fresno High School and attended Fresno State College for two years. He then went to work for PG&E until joining the United States Air Force to serve in World War II, where he survived the blitzkrieg on London, living near Abbey Road in St. John's Wood. He returned to PG&E after the war where he met Helen Brown, then a secretary with PG&E. They fell in love and married on September 8, 1946, celebrating their 70th anniversary this past year. Earl was a proud and dedicated company man and retired from PG&E after 43 years. "Pop," as Earl was known to his grandkids, was always a tease and a putterer, enjoying spending time in his yard gardening and in his garage doing woodwork. Long after retiring, he continued to help out in the kitchen at PG&E retirement functions. He is remembered by his grandchildren as a hard working, caring, and playful grandfather. "We love you dad. You will continue to be in our thoughts and in hearts." Earl was a good and generous husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He leaves behind his daughter, Susan Ballinger and her husband John; granddaughter, Merry Beth Kamal and her husband Sammy; great-grandson Rylan; and his daughter, Sharon Koehler and her husband Dave; and two grandsons, Shannon, and Spence and his fiancé Emily Adolph. Our family would like to thank all of the wonderful staff at San Joaquin Gardens who gave him love and care over the last few months. The family will hold a private service for Earl.
