EDWARD MOSS Obituary

Edward M. Moss, M.D. passed away on Friday, January 18, 2013, as a result of an injury he sustained while hiking in the foothills near Brighton Crest. Ed was born on July 2, 1924, in San Francisco, Ca. to Harry and Gertrude. He spent his youth in Los Angeles, graduating from Beverly Hills High School. At the onset of World War II, he enlisted in the United States Navy V-12 program. The Government opted to send him to Stanford University for training as a physician. Ultimately, he completed undergraduate work, medical school and a Pediatric Residency at Stanford University. He also met Elaine, his lifelong companion and wife. They were married in 1946. Their sons, Michael and Richard were born a few years later. Ed remained in the Naval Reserves with a commitment to serve. When the Korean War began he was called to active duty. He was assigned to a Navy ship transporting troops to Korea and caring for wounded troops on the long journey back home. After completing his service, he moved his family to Fresno and began a Pediatrics practice. However, in 1959, he decided to change specialties and enrolled in the Dermatology Residency program at University of California San Francisco Hospital. He became one of only seven pediatric dermatologist in the country and, because of his unique qualifications, lectured throughout the country. He practiced general dermatology until 1990. Ed's love for the mountains was nurtured very early in his life as a result of spending summers in Yosemite. He was happiest and most relaxed while spending time at his cabin in Shaver Lake and later at Tamarack Ridge. The Wilderness area near the Dinky Lakes was protected for future generations in large part because of his efforts to obtain such designation through Congress. He loved to fly fish in the small streams and lakes above Huntington Lake. Winters were for downhill and cross country skiing, as well as snow shoeing. Tennis, golf, travel and classical music were his other passions. He had tremendous energy and enthusiasm for life, enjoying it to the fullest. Most of all, he loved and enjoyed time with his family. He will be missed tremendously by his family and friends. Ed is survived by his wife, Elaine Moss; sons, Michael Moss and his wife Lisa, and Richard Moss, DDS and his wife Sally; as well as grandchildren, Samuel and his wife Alison, Jacob and his wife Lindsay, Joseph, and Laura. The family has elected to conduct a private funeral service. However, there will be a Memorial Service at San Joaquin Gardens, 5555 North Fresno Street, Fresno, Ca. on Sunday, January 27, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. The family requests that donations in Ed's memory be made to the Fresno Philharmonic Society.

Words cannot begin to tell you how much Dr. Moss meant to me and my family as a physician and friend. I was a very young child when I was diagnosed with a rare skin disease. (Stephens-Johnson Syndrome). It was so serious that I almost died. Dr. Moss was called into review my illness and he knew exactly how to treat my condition. Thanks to Dr. Moss, I recovered and have gone on to live a healthy life. During my teenage years, I continued to see him for my skin and he took good care of me. My family and I thought the world of Dr. Moss. He was well respected and admired. Even though I had not seen him in many years, knowing that he has passed on, has made me very sad and I will miss him alot. To this day, I remember my office visits with him. He was a great person. I could go on and on about him. What a great man! My sincere condolences for your loss.

I always remember going to his office the first time about my skin problems and when he discovered I went to Fresno State, he immediately said I should see him at the Student Health Center for a lot less money. Finding out later that I was an English major who was going to be a librarian, Dr. Moss always wanted to know what I was reading and shared his favorite authors and titles with me as well. A very nice man who helped a lot with my skin problems too.
