Gary Carozza Obituary

Gary Carozza was born on June 17, 1948, to Ann and Michael Carozza in San Jose, California. He passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2009, at home with his family by his side after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. As a child, Gary's family moved to Fresno in 1958, where he graduated from Hoover High School in 1966, and enrolled at Fresno State College that same year. In college, he was interested in both the arts and sciences and ultimately graduated with a double major in photography and biology. Gary joined the U.S. Naval Reserves in the late 1960's and served his two years of active duty in Yokosuka, Japan during the Vietnam War. Gary met his future wife Pam when she transferred to Hoover High School in 1965 end they later married and settled in Fresno. Following a brief return to Fresno State to acquire a post-graduate certificate in environmental health, Gary began his career as a Sanitarian for Fresno County in the mid-1970's. He later became Director of Environmental Health and ultimately Director of Community Health with responsibility for services such as environmental health, public health and emergency response. During those years, he also earned a Master's Degree in Public Administration from the University of San Francisco, and the respect of many for his efforts to insure the delivery of quality services to Fresno County residents. While Gary pursued a career in the scientific-health care field, he also maintained an intense commitment to the game of golf that had begun around the age of thirteen and finally included playing on three continents as well as numerous championship courses. He was proud to claim, however briefly, a handicap of four. Upon retirement, Gary enjoyed traveling with family and friends, but when he was home, most mornings were spent at the golf course with like-minded friends in pursuit of that little white ball and a perfect round of golf. Gary was a devoted family man who loved watching his family grow to include a new sonin-law when his daughter married in 2004. He also greeted his first grandchild as she came into this world and watched her turn one year old this June. He was a man true to his ideals of loyalty, honesty and integrity, loved by his family and friends, and a gentleman who will be greatly missed by those who were touched by his tremendous spirit. The family wishes to thank Dr. Thomas Hackett and all the nurses and staff who work at the Cancer Center with him, and to Hinds Hospice for their care and support during Gary's illness. Gary was preceded in death by his mother Ann and his father Mike. He is survived by his wife Pam; his daughter Meghan Tori and her husband Ali ; his granddaughter Alara; his sister, Janet Carozza; and his mother-in-law, Jean Leedy. Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Gary's Life to be held at the Riverbend Golf Club, 43369 Avenue 12 in Madera County on Thursday, September 3, 2009, at 5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Hinds Hospice, or the American Cancer Society. NEPTUNE SOCIETY OF CENTRAL CALIFORNIA 1154 West Shaw Avenue Fresno, California (559)222-7764

I had the great fortune to work with Gary for eight years for Fresno County. There was not a day that went by, no matter how difficult, that he could not make me laugh. He had a wonderful and playful spirit that was a joy to be around, as well as great strength and integrity. Although I have not seen him in many years, his smile and laughter are seared in my memory. All my best to you, Pam, and your family. I know he is sorely missed.

Gary and I started at the Health Department together back in 1975. Gary was always one of the brightest and most interesting collegues who I have ever worked with. I had the privilege of knowing Gary for many years. For most of us it was no surprise when he rose to the top because of those qualities. Our careers were seperated over twenty years ago when I went to work for the state, but even then we sometimes intefaced at various levels over the years. Gary was always a ferocious fighter, defender and supporter for Fresno County Government and the departments services. The County was lucky to have him on their side. My sincere condolences to Pam and the rest of the family members; as I know Gary will be missed by them, as well as by all his close friends

Maybe Gary is already playing golf in Heaven

Sincerely,
Peter Ruggerello

As Gary's cousin, close in age and seeing Gary frequently over the last 60 years, I can honestly state that Gary's smile and spirit were a wonderful part of my life. I'll miss them, it's true. But they'll continue live in memory with me and my brothers and sister as a happy reminder of Gary and an example of how to live life. The Ribisi clan loves you Gary. Move on to your next great adventure. It was great ride!

Pam,

It was tragic to hear the news of Gary’s passing. It was my honor to have had the opportunity to work with him professionally. My thoughts are with you and your family. I will unfortunately be unable to attend the celebration planned for Thursday, but will be there in spirit.

I consider myself honored to have known Gary and to have worked for him at the Fresno County Department of Public Health. Gary was a unique man with great responsibilities, as Director of the Health Department, who considered everyone equal. Of all his greatness the one thing that I most remember of Gary is no matter the circumstances he always took a moment to share a smile and say hi. His passing is not only a loss to his family and friends, but to all the citizens of Fresno County.

Our thoughts and prayers are for Pam and family as they begin a new chapter in their lives with the memories of Gary.

Pam,

I was most distressed when I heard tonight of Gary's passing. I loved it when he would give me something to enforce/do when I was frustrated. I loved working with both of you. I will treasure our friendship forever. Thank you for all the joy you have given me.

I extent my heartfelt condolences to Gary's family. I had the honor and privilege of knowing Gary professionally. After he retired from the county, I ran into Gary at Marshall's. I was so happy to see him. I reached out to him and gave him a hug and told him that he was one of the most wonderful persons I have ever met. I am so glad I was able to express my feelings towards him. He will always be a beacon in my life and a testament to the good that we can find in human beings. When I read of his passing today, I started crying and even now tears are running. It simply hurts to hear of such a wonderful person passing.

Sincerely,
Ruben Moreno
