Gary Sells Obituary

Gary Robert Sells was born on July 2, 1950, to Christie and Millard Sells in Byrdstown Tennessee. He was the youngest child, preceded by his sister Alice. He moved to New Castle, Indiana when he was small and lived there until he was 11. The family moved to California when he was in 6th grade, and he attended Auberry Elementary School and was a proud graduate of Sierra High School.

Gary continued his education at Fresno State earning a degree in Health Science, and then a master's degree from University of La Verne. Gary went on to complete a Doctorate in Education at University of San Francisco.

Gary's career in education began at Clovis High School where he taught Health Science for 11 years. He was a favorite teacher of many students, a class advisor, and brought his humor into the classroom each day. He continued his career as an administrator at Miramonte, Clovis West, and as principal of Malloch Elementary, and then to Kremen School of Education at CSUF. Gary finished his career at Fresno County of Office of Education, working on establishing Scout Island.

In 1981 Gary met his wife, Pam, on a blind date. Their shared their faith, values and love for people made for a good match. The following year they were married and were blessed with two girls, who Gary loved and cherished.

His love for cowboys and the American West led Gary to write cowboy poetry and perform with Jack Hannah and the Sons of the San Joaquin. Gary, who performed under the name of Dusty Trails, and Jack, would share their music, poems and stories with elementary students in Fresno County. They co-authored two children's books, providing students with a greater understanding of the important role of the cowboy.

Gary was a faithful follower of Christ and was both an elder and deacon at First Presbyterian Church. Fresno, He served on the boards of CBMC, Kepler School, FCA, WellBeing and was a mentor to many men.

Gary passed away peacefully on July 27 after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2017. Although the disease compromised his ability to communicate and understand, his faith in Jesus Christ, love for the word of God and his joyful sprit continued to be evident to all.

Gary is survived by his wife of 43 years, Pam, his daughter Meagan and husband Scott Grossman, and children, Addison, Taylor and Molly and also daughter Natalie and husband Greg Nichols, and children Haylie and Lincoln. In addition, he is survived by his sister Alice Sells of Kentucky.

Earlier today

My condolences and prayers to the Sells family, Gary's friends & colleagues, and his students...I was just one of the many students whose lives he touched so deeply at Clovis HS. He was more than just a great teacher, he was our friend. He helped me make it through High School. It was wonderful to have someone that shared Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. There is so much more I could say, but to tell the truth, Im in shock over this loss. My heart is truly broken for all.
Mr. Sells.....I will 4-ever be your "Arco Queen".

Gary was a special person who used music to teach about the West and the American Cowboy. WE were blessed to have him perform at the University House several times. I was touched by his love for people and his commitment to his values and beliefs. Dusty Trails you made a difference in many lives!

Yesterday

Mr. Sells was the teacher we all hoped to have when we were students and for those of us who chose education as a career.... He was the kind of teacher we hoped we´d become.

How fortunate we were to have had such a wonderful role model, friend and hero.

Sweet peace to his wonderful wife Pam and beautiful family. Thank you for sharing him with us.

Yesterday

For over 20 years we had the good fortune to live next door to Gary and Pam. We watched their beautiful daughters grow up with ours. We soon realized what great people they were. Gary was so unique in that when you talked to him he was more interested in your life than telling you about his. He knew everyone! Our five minute conversations usually turned into an hour and when it was over I would come inside and realize that I had learned something from him. He had that special quality. What a man! Our condolences to Pam and the girls.

There is not to many men of true finer character that lived, loved and laughed like Gary. He had the southern charm, never met a strange and genuine smile that could warm any heart. I am a better man for knowing him as a friend.
God Bless the Sells Family!

Gary Sells was a talented educator and true leader for all of us who worked with him at Clovis West High School. Gary was down to earth and authentic and that´s why we loved him so much. One could always get a good laugh at his sense of humor too. Condolences to Pam and his beloved girls as you all suffered as a result of such a cruel diagnosis. May his memory be eternal.
