Gary Storey Obituary

Gary Storey was born in Bakersfield, California on March 23, 1935. He passed away on March 13, 2019 at his home in Fresno, California, with family at his side. Gary attended John Muir Elementary School, Hamilton Junior High, and Fresno High School, where he met a number of classmates that would later develop into many life-long friendships. After graduating from Fresno State University, he left Fresno to attend Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, starting a career path that turned out to be the love of his life. After graduating from medical school, Gary joined a Residency program in Urology at St. Louis City Hospital, where he met and married a nurse, Lynn Williamson Storey, with whom he would later have three children. After St. Louis, Gary continued his training in Pediatric Urology at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City before enlisting to serve as a surgeon in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, stationed at the Long Binh Army Hospital near Saigon. Upon discharge from the Army, Gary returned to Fresno to join a Urology practice, continuing the work he always wanted to do. Gary spent the remainder of his life, nearly fifty years, practicing Urology in Fresno. He never wanted to do anything else, nor live anywhere else. In his last days, Gary expressed how grateful he felt to have been able to spend his life doing what he loved, to have had a wonderful family, and to have benefitted from so many meaningful friendships dating back to the Fresno High School days. In recent years, there was nothing Gary enjoyed doing more than getting together for coffee with the guys to reminisce about the past, talk Fresno State sports, or whatever subject came to mind. The topic of conversation was, of course, far less important than simply spending time together. Gary is survived by his second wife, Charlene Hagus DVM of Fresno; his son Steve Storey, M.D. and wife Samantha, M.D. and their children, Cole, Priya and Maya of Atlanta, Georgia; son Greg Storey of Sunnyvale, California; daughter Leslie Storey, M.D. and husband Weston Threlkeld and their children Isabella, Calvin and Talia of Fresno; Gary's sister, Harriet Perkins of Fresno and her children Mitchell Perkins and Peggy Washburn. As requested, no service will be held.

Gary had a very unique speech pattern. I could never figure it out. After reading some of these comments I'm wondering if his dialect was more from St.Louis than Bakersfield . In any event, when Gary spoke he was always very direct and precise . You could never miss his point. His comments about life, about the need to keep his profession as respectable as possible will always be remembered... I did not join him on his Saturday basketball forays at Dr. Cantrell's or Dr. Kirby's house, but I'm sure he was formidable. I did join him when he volunteered at a comprehensive children's clinic for hydrocephalic children where his insights and advice were always helpful. he will he missed but not forgotten...

Gary was dedicated to the truth in medical practice and perfection in his speciality. He was an innate teacher as well sharing from his experiences. he continued to offer his services long after colleagues had retired. He liked a dry joke and had a wry sense of humor. His advice was always right on.

Dr. Story became my doctor when I was a child due to an accident I was in. He went above and beyond in care and I am thankful for the wonderful care he gave me, which has given me the ability to lead a normal life. I was a small child when I began seeing him and he always took the time to explain things to me in ways I could understand. He was very kind to me also, in fact he was the only doctor I wasn't afraid of as a child. Later in life he helped save my father. I will always remember him for his kindness and his excellent medical care he gave to my father and I. Thank you Dr. Story.

I have known Dr. Storey since the mid 1960's. We first met when I was a resident in anesthesiology at St. Louis City Hospital and Dr. Story was chief of urology at St. Louis University. Even though he left St. Louis many years ago we have remained life long friends. My wife is from San Antonio and enjoyed cooking Mexican food which in the 60's was hard to find outside of Texas and CA. She could always plan on Gary coming for dinner when she served Mexican food.
Gary was a mentor and educator to many young urology residents and physicians. He was very demanding of their knowledge and skills for the benefit of their patients. He had outstanding technical skills and made sure the physicians he trained were also excellent practitioners. At 83 years old, it is hard to believe he was still practicing urology four days a week less than one month before he died. He still enjoyed being able to treat and converse with his patients.
He was a proud father, husband, excellent physician and friend to many.
Our condolences to Charlene and all his family. He will be greatly missed.

Gary and I have been friends and my family doctor. We played basketball in high school and two on two pick up game in his drive way on many a day. May the good Lord provide him with all the wood working tools and supply's he wants. God bless Gary and his family.

Gary was my oldest friend, from Hamilton Jr. High to date. I'll always remember the great times we had together. Gary leaving has taken a large part of my past memories (I hope) with him.
My wife and I will truly miss him.
