MARK FLOYD MATTHEWS

Mark Matthews passed away unexpectedly in an accident on Sunday, November 5, 2017. He was born on November 15, 1951, to Floyd and RoseAnn Matthews in Fresno, CA. Growing up in Fresno, he graduated from Hoover High School in 1969, and California State University, Fresno, in 1973. He married the love of his life, Barbara Schuermeyer, in 1973, and began his career in the insurance industry, later specializing in aviation. They moved to Kingsburg, CA, where they raised their daughter and son, each whom made him very proud. Mark lived life as an adventure and never backed away from a challenge. On his sixteenth birthday, he got his driver's license and completed his first solo flight as a pilot on the same day. He enjoyed many hobbies including motorcycles, cars, hang gliding, scuba diving, auto racing, snow and water skiing, boating, and airplanes. In the last ten years, his greatest passion was his family, spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren, and introducing them to the activities he enjoyed. Mark loved his family fiercely. He is survived by Barbara, his loving wife of 44 years, who encouraged him in all of his activities; his adoring daughter, Lisa Matthews Crabb and husband Kenny; devoted son, Mark C. Matthews; cherished grandchildren, Christian and Kendall Crabb; sister, Marcia Becker and husband Steve; sister-in-law, Anne Scott and husband Terry; nieces and nephews, Tracy Scott King and husband Jeff, and children, Jordan and Jayden, Phil Becker, Kristin Becker Lynch and husband Dan, Doug Scott and wife Alison, and children, Drew, Evan, and Ryan. A Memorial Service will be held at Evangelical Covenant Church of Kingsburg, 1490 Lincoln St., Kingsburg, CA, on Saturday, November 18, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., with a reception following. Remembrances may be made in Mark's honor to the Evangelical Covenant Church of Kingsburg; or to the Catalina Island Conservancy.
