RICHARD JOSEPH MACEDO Jr. obituary

RICHARD MACEDO Obituary

Joseph returned to his Lord on Tuesday, February 23, 2010, after a valiant seven year battle with Lung Cancer caused by second-hand smoke. He was fourth generation Madeiran-Portuguese on his mother's side, and was born in Hawaii in 1941; he was a fourth generation Azorean-Portuguese Californian on his dad's side, and was raised in Fresno. Richard graduated from Fresno High School in 1959, and graduated with a B.A. and M.A. from California State University, Fresno. As a Commissioned Air Force Officer, he was especially proud of his active service and his part in the protection and safe return of air-medical evacuation C-141s with flights of wounded soldiers from Southeast Asia. He was awarded the U.S. Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service as an Intelligence Officer. He continued serving in the active reserves until he retired as a Major in 1986. After four and a half years of active Air Force service Richard served 26 years as an Administrator in Fresno County government, including the Library System, Housing and Community Development, and General Services. He also was the Associate County Clerk for the Superior Courts, Elections, and Marriage and Business Licenses. After retiring, he and his wife, Consuelo moved to Cambria where he served as Legislative Staff for the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors, North Coast District. In Fresno, Richard was happy to serve in the Catholic Church as a high school team-teacher for ten years in Confirmation preparation; he taught full-time in junior high at St. Helen's School for two years. He taught in the Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults, and was a member of the Fresno Diocesan Choir. He ministered as a Lector and Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist in Fresno, and at Santa Rosa Church in Cambria. Richard and his family are thankful to San Luis Obispo Doctors Howard Hayashi, Tom Spillane, Fred Vernacchia, Robert Brenman, James Longo, and John Headding and their staffs for their kind and conscientious care. Richard also thanks his many friends and co-workers for their love and prayers, especially life-long friends Dr. Alan Harrison; Michael D. Dowling, LLD; Dennis Gaab; Greg Vasquez; Worth Vogel, LLD; Shirley and Bill Bianchi; Dr. Gerry and Marty Main; and Rod and Susan Anderson. Richard is survived by Consuelo Stewart Macedo, his wife and soul-mate of 46 years; delightful daughter, Katherine Michelle Gulseth and her husband Tod; wonderful son, Alan Richard Macedo and his wife Chikako; amazing grandchildren, Alexis Yuhi and Alycia Miumi Macedo, and Danielle Sydney and Roth Ulrich Gulseth. He is also survived by a loving brother Tom; and loving sisters, Cecily Macedo and Jane Macedo de Veer and their families; as well as his sister-in-law, Erica Stewart and brother-in-law Arthur Stewart and their families. Catholic burial services were held at St. Peter's Cemetery in Fresno, presided by the Rev. Eric Swearingen, with full military honors. A Memorial Service and celebration of Richard's life will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fresno, on Saturday, March 6, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. A lunch reception will follow in the parish hall. Remembrances may be made to Poverello House, P.O. Box 12225, Fresno, Ca.; the SLO County Food Bank, PO Box 2070, Paso Robles, Ca. 93446; Cambria Library Fund, Friends of the Cambria Library, 900 Main St., Cambria, Ca. 93428; or Hospice Partners of SLO County.

Richard was such a kind man. It was a pleasure to know him and work with him from time to time on Cambria water and lot retirement issues.

I feel so blessed to have had the honor to know Richard, even though for a short time. Richard touched my life in so many ways. His strength and strong faith taught me a lot. I work at one of the many medical facilities Richard had to visit over the last 7 years and he always came in with a wonderful smile. Richard and Consuelo are true angels from above!!! Richard will truly be missed! God Bless Consuelo and family.

I worked for Richard in Fresno County and connected with him again when we were both working for San Luis Obispo County. He was always lecturing me to go back to church and I think he would be pleased to know that I finally did it! He was a very nice man and very much a Godly man. I'm glad to have known him. I know Consuelo and Richard's entire family know where his new home is now and take comfort in the knowledge he is no longer suffering.
