Robert Wright Obituary

ROBERT SAGE WRIGHT LT. COL RETIRED Beloved husband, father, and teacher, Robert Sage Wright, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, on Saturday, November 1, 2003. Robert was born to Jacob and Mary Wright in Selma, CA, on April 27, 1912, the third oldest of six siblings. He left Selma to attend UC Berkeley where he obtained his secondary teaching credential. Soon thereafter he began his teaching career at Santa Clara High School where he taught biology, physics, chemistry, and math. WWII interrupted his teaching career. He was called to active duty in the U.S. Army air corps in 1942, and returned to teaching at Santa Clara High School in 1945. He received a masters degree in education from Stanford University in 1951. His teaching career lasted 35 years. He remained in the Air Force Reserve for 20 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He met his wife of 60 years, Clarice Smith, while teaching in Santa Clara. The couple was married in 1943. He and Clarice moved into their house on Linden Drive in Santa Clara in 1948. They remained in the same house until moving to Santa Barbara in May of 2003. He is survived by Clarice; sons, Robert of Mill Valley, CA, James of Santa Barbara, CA, and David of Santa Ynez, CA; grandson, Sage of Santa Barbara, and granddaughter Zoe of Santa Barbara. Our favorite memories of "dad" include his love of camping, fishing, stamp and coin collecting, and most of all gardening. His house on Linden Drive was always in bloom. Parakeets, cats, turtles, tortoises, pheasants, ducks, chinchillas, chickens, and rabbits also found their way to his house. "He will be missed." No Memorial Service is planned. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Visiting Nurses and Hospice Care of Santa Barbara, 222 E. Canon Perdido St., Santa Barbara, CA 93101-3283. Arrangements by Neptune Society.
