Tom Lutton Obituary

Dr. Tom A. Lutton, 88, passed peacefully on November 21. Born in Bakersfield on August 3, 1937, he was the youngest of Dave and Mary's five children. His pride in his heritage from his parents' Belfast, Northern Ireland roots shaped his kinship and empathy for all immigrants.

He spent his formative years in Taft, California. He graduated from Taft High School, was a Fresno State Bulldog and received his doctorate from University of La Verne. He thrived in the educational family of CUSD for 33 years, extending kindness and inspiring children to look beyond challenges and become their best selves. He wanted all children to feel valued and seen, learning all of the kids' names while serving as principal at Weldon, Lincoln and then Pinedale Elementary Schools. He spoke highly of his students, staff, student teachers, friends, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and reveled in their successes.

Tom had a playful wit that brightened rooms. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed golfing, camping, fishing, skiing and then sitting by a blazing fire reading his latest James Patterson novel.

He is survived by his childhood sweetheart, lifelong companion, and adored wife of 69 years, Dorothy; His children Steve and Jennifer (Beekman), seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his siblings David, Jean, Ruby, Pat, and by his son Mike.

Please come celebrate his life on Saturday, January 10 at 11:00 a.m. at New Hope Community Church, Clovis.

"Watch my lip" was his patented slogan. He was my principal at Lincoln for 3 years. I remember his orange car.

Dr. Lutton was my favorite Principle. I was in the 4th grade at Lincoln Elementary in when I met him. He would be out in school yard and shake everyones hand. He transferred to Pinedale Elementary the next school year as I did too. He was my Principle until 6th grade. He was a kind and funny guy. My mom repeatedly would lock her keys in her car at pick up and he would come out with a hanger in hand ready to help her out.
He was a great man and one of those people that stay with you even after you graduate. He will be missed, my condolences to his family and friends.
