Rev. John Lutton, a distinguished pastor and community leader, departed this life on October 6, 2025, in Ligonier, Indiana, at the age of 86. Born on July 13, 1939, in Muncie, Indiana. John dedicated over 60 years of his life to the ministry, serving others through his unwavering commitment to faith, public service, and family.
John's remarkable career began with his service in the U.S. Navy, laying a foundation of discipline and dedication that he would carry throughout his life. Following his military service, he devoted a significant part of his life to ministry as a pastor, providing spiritual guidance and support to countless individuals and families. His passion for community service extended beyond the pulpit; he served as a Ligonier City Councilman for 24 years and held the position of Reserve Deputy Sheriff for 15 years in Noble County. Known for his strong sense of justice and unwavering integrity, John was deeply respected in his community.
Rev. Lutton was also an avid Amateur Radio Operator for 70 years, Call Sign: WD9DDZ, where he connected with people from all walks of life. His interests included music, as he enjoyed playing both guitar and piano; music was a source of joy that he shared with those around him. In addition, he was a talented ventriloquist. John was an enthusiastic member of the National Rifle Association and the Indiana Sheriffs Association, demonstrating his commitment to both community safety and the outdoors.
Perhaps one of his greatest legacies is the love he fostered within his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Johnetta Lutton of Ligonier, and their children, Becky (Robert) Stout of Ligonier and John "Bo" (Julie) Lutton, Jr. John was a proud grandfather to Brandon (Trinity Patton) Stout of Ligonier, Jonathan (Sushmita Samaddar) Stout of Bloomington, Bo (Kenzie) Lutton of Plymouth, and Brooke (Nick) Knafel of Ligonier. His great-grandchildren—Maverick, Ledger, Brynleigh, Eastyn, Ethan and Nova.
He was preceded in death by his father, Oliver Madison Lutton, his mother, Rosemary (Chancellor) Lutton, his sister Lindy, his brother James Lutton, and his grandson Cody Lutton. Each of these individuals held a special place in his heart, and their memories will be cherished by those who survive him.
Rev. John Lutton's life was a testament to faith, service, and family. He leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the community he served with such passion and commitment.
A gathering of family and friends will take place on Friday, October 10, 2025 from 2-4 and 5-7pm at Ligonier Church of the Nazarene, 1102 S. Martin Street, Ligonier, Indiana 46767. A Life Celebration service will take place at 2pm on Saturday, October 11, 2025 at the church. Pastors Gary and Josh Sheets will officiate. Burial and military graveside honors will be performed at Thorn Cemetery in Albion, IN. Memorial gifts may be given to the Middlebury Church of the Nazarene or the Lutton Family. Titus Funeral Home, 1001 South Huntington Street, Syracuse, IN 46567 has been entrusted with care of John.
