Ola Mize Obituary

Colonel Ola Lee Mize, of Gadsden, Ala., died March 12, 2014.
He was born in Marshall County in 1931 and entered the Army as a "buck private" in 1948. He worked his way up through the ranks and served three tours of duty in Vietnam. He retired as a Full Colonel with the Special Forces. He was in charge of the Special Forces School the last five years of his military career.
Among his fellow comrades he was known as a "warrior's warrior." He was the most dedicated soldier you could find. Most of all, he loved the Lord. If he could have a message to send his friends and others throughout the world, it would be "Give your heart to the Lord and live for Him." He was a member of Southside Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Donna Kate Feazell; parents, Herbert A. Mize and Belle Mize Barry; and brothers, Herbert Wenton Mize and Clifford Mize; brother-in-law, Andrew (Dicky) Jackson.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Mize; daughter, Teresa Peterson (Rodney); grandchildren, Brandy Pearson, Jennifer Frachiseur, Katie Smith (Chris) and Joshua Haney; great-grandchildren, Sarah Haney, Luke Pearson, Drew Pearson, Landon Smith, Cason Smith and Hunter Haney; brothers, Gary Mize, Donald Mize and Johnny Mize; sisters, Judy Hienrich, Brenda Garza and Della George; brothers-in-law, Lee Jackson and Jack W. Cooey; sisters-in-law, Denise Jackson Cooey, Kathy Shields Jackson; numerous nieces and nephews; his chosen family, Joel and Tammy Haney, Rick and Linda Vaughan, and many special friends.
Pallbearers will be United States Army Honor Guard.
Special thanks to Lawley Hospice, Dr. Kaleem, Kathy Garner, CRNP, Dr. Lucian Newman Jr., Dr. George Harrison, Dr. Daniel Ryan, Dr. C. Barry Dobbs and Dr. Keithan, III.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 15. 2014, at Southside Baptist Church, 3975 Highway 77, Southside, Ala., 35907. Full military honors will be at the graveside at Crestwood Cemetery immediately following the service.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 8 this evening at Southside Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Southside Baptist Church Building Fund, 3975 Highway 77, Southside, AL 35907.

I remember Lee as a member of my 1947 sophomore class at Emma Sansom High School. He joined the Army and did not return for the Junior year. Over the years I kept track of his military experience. Lee served his country well!

Thank you for your service to the U.S. Army and our nation. I'm saddened to see a warrior of your caliber pass away. The vets of WWII and Korea, "the old breed", are fast fading into history. We may never see your like again. Fair winds and following seas.

An American hero has left us to "prep the DZ" in Heaven. Lee was a friend and mentor, but most of all, a genuine gentleman that filled the room with his gentle, kind, humble bearing. A hero to the Regiment, a hero to his teammates, a hero to the men he mentored. God Bless You, Sir! My condolences to Ms. Betty and all the family.

You and the brave men like you who went into battle never knowing if you would make it home to Alabama are my heroes. The world is a much better place because of you and a grateful nation appreciates what you've done and how you've lived your life. You have been an inspiration for so many.
