Alfred Tingley Obituary

Alfred "Al" Gwynne Tingley, 80, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, December 4, 2020 at home with his wife by his side. Born September 22, 1940, in Providence, Rhode Island, he was the son of the late Otto Freeman and Virginia Clawson Tingley. He was the beloved husband of Patricia (Patsy) Borders Batchelor Tingley. He was a member of Blacksburg First Baptist Church and the Jabez Sunday School Class.

In addition to his wife, Al is survived by his son Alfred G. Tingley, Jr. of Wakefield, Rhode Island, his daughters; Gwynne Millar of Richmond, Rhode Island, Aimee T. Murphy (Patrick) of N. Charleston, SC, Holly T. Angel of Hilton Head, SC, Rebecca T. Hughes (Michael) of Travelers Rest, SC. He is also survived by step-children Dr. Arnold L. (Vaughan) Batchelor, Jr. (Michelle) of Fort Mill, SC and Ann B. Oxford (Ronald) of Charlotte, NC. His grandchildren include Emily Nugent (Adam), Chase Mills, Peyton Mills, Hayden Mills, Courtney B. Potts (Harrison), Jordan Batchelor, and Hunter Oxford. His siblings include brothers; Robert Tingley (Janice) of Boca Raton, Florida, Otto Freeman Tingley (Laura) of E. Greenwich, Rhode Island, Carl Tingley (Gretchen) of Charleston, Rhode Island, and several nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents and son Andrew Tingley, he is predeceased by a brother Edward Tingley and sister Carolyn Darraugh.

Al grew up in Cranston, Rhode Island and graduated from Cranston High School. He worked as a machinist for Bostitch Inc., technical service representative for Leesona Corp., and sales representative for Lawson-Hemphill. He traveled all over the world for his work and was a member of the Textured Yarn Association of America. Al was a 32nd Mason and Shriner. His hobbies were golf, hockey, fishing, watching Clemson football games, and researching on the computer. He and his brothers shared the loved of hockey and for a time, Al was a professional hockey player.

Due to the current health situation a private Celebration of Life service was held with the Reverend Jeff Connell officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to First Baptist Church, 103 S. Rutherford St., Blacksburg, SC 29702 or to a charity of one's choice.

I was very sad to hear of Al's passing. We worked together at Lawson-Hemphill Sales for 29 years & always enjoyed our friendly chats. Al was truly one of a kind. My sincere condolences to the family.
