Gaf fney, S.C. - Carolyn Davis Goforth, 88, formerly of 327 Vernon Street, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 10, 2018 from complications of heart disease. Carolyn was the beloved wife of Rev. John Burgess Goforth for 71 years. Their unwavering love for each other, grounded on their shared faith and love of God, serves as the epitome of a Christian marriage.
Having lifelong roots established living and working in Gaffney raising their family, the couple obeyed God's call in the late 1960s and began a new life in full time ministry. No pastor ever had a more devoted and supportive wife. Carolyn taught Sunday School, worked in the WMU, sang in the choir, and sometimes directed the choir. She accompanied her husband to sit with families during surgeries, to visit shut-ins, the sick, the bereaved, the needy, and the troubled; she was always positive and never had a hurtful thing to say about anyone. She brought her delicious ham rolls, chocolate candies, cakes, and chicken tenders to those who needed TLC, and she used her beautiful voice to sing at too many funerals and weddings to count. To know her was to love her.
In addition to her parents, the late Willard Hampton Davis and Bessie Pryor Davis, Carolyn was preceded in death by two brothers, Dever Davis and W. D. Davis. She is survived by her sister, Valerie Turner, of Gaffney. Numerous nieces and nephews will miss their Aunt Carolyn.
Heartbroken in the loss of their sweet mother are her children; daughter Deedra Goforth Kirby and her husband, Rev. Robert Kirby, Jr. of Cowpens; son John, Jr. and his wife, Cynthia, of Spartanburg; and son Michael W. and his wife, Candy, of Gaffney. Six grandchildren have lost their much loved Granny; Robert Kirby III (Amy), Tessa Cash (Travis), Tyler Kirby, Paul Goforth (Anne), Davis Goforth (Heather), and Grayson Goforth along with ten greatgrandchildren. With every visit and phone call, her children were told how much they were loved and treasured and that they were prayed for several times every day. Her children were blessed beyond measure.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:30 PM on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at Southside Baptist Church where Carolyn Goforth was a member. Funeral services will immediately follow at 3:00 PM at the church with Dr. Wofford Caughman officiating. Interment will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Hospice Compassus, 212 E. Floyd Baker Boulevard, Gaffney, SC 29340 or to Southside Baptist Church, "Capital Improvement Fund", 204 W. O'Neal Street, Gaffney, SC 29340.
