Cowpens - Vernon Griffin, 100, passed away peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus on Saturday, June 7, 2025 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. "I fought a good fight…I won the race!" Wow! Jesus in all his glory and Heaven, my wonderful prize!!
Born in Gaffney, he was the son of the late Charlie M. Griffin and Lola Bell Ward Griffin. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Griffin, and a sister, Annie Belle Griffin Patty.
Vernon was predeceased by his first wife, Velma Griffin and his second wife, Lois Gardner Holland Griffin.
He is survived and left to cherish wonderful and loving memories by his son, Ray Holland (Joyce) and daughter, Kay Adair (Michael). When Vernon married our Mom, he inherited our huge family. Vernon has three grandchildren, Patrick Adair (Michelle), Raymond Holland II (Melanie) and Valarie McCall; nine great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a grandson, Phillip Holland. Vernon loved us all as he never had children of his own.
He retired from Timken and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and was a devoted Christian and a lifelong member of High Point Baptist Church. He held many positions in the Church, Choir director, finance committee, over the burial plots in the cemetery, he was a Sunday School teacher and other positions in his life at High Point Baptist Church.
His granddaughter, Valarie sent a message to the Atlanta Braves about his 100th birthday was coming due soon and the Braves sent a very sweet message from the team, a hat, a bobble head figure of one of their most valuable players and a beautiful card with signatures to wish Vernon a great birthday. He was so surprised, and proudly displayed for all to see.
After his retirement, he grew beautiful gardens and grew several tomatoes that weighed in at two pounds in size. He loved to get his hands in the dirt.
The family will receive friends from 11:00AM until 12:00PM on Wednesday, June 11, 2025 at High Point Baptist Church. Funeral services will immediately follow at 12:00PM at the church with Reverend Clifford Phillips officiating. Interment will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: High Point Baptist Church, "Building Fund", 504 High Point Road, Gaffney, SC, 29341.
