CHARLES WOODS Obituary

WOODS, JR.,
CHARLES TRUMAN, 76
Charles Truman Woods, Jr., age 76, of Gainesville, died suddenly in his home on May 5, 2017. Chuck was the son of the late Charles T. Woods and Edna A. Woods. He was born in New York City in 1941. His father, a Colonel in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, brought his family with him while stationed in both domestic and foreign assignments. In addition to living in New York, Woods and his parents lived in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Washington, D.C.; Frankfurt, Germany; and Tokyo, Japan. Woods graduated from Tokyo American High School in 1959. Upon returning to the United States, the family drove from California to Florida where they settled in Cocoa Beach. Chuck later moved to Gainesville to attend the University of Florida and never left.
Chuck earned a bachelor's degree in advertising in 1963 and a master's degree in journalism in 1965, both from UF. He went on to become an assistant professor and then a tenured associate professor for UF/IFAS Communications until he retired in 2006. He served as the Manager of the IFAS news program and editor of the IMPACT science magazine, and was known as a prolific writer.
He was a member of the Association for Communications Excellence (ACE). Throughout his career, he won numerous international communications awards through ACE for his writing and communications projects. He eventually was awarded life membership in the organization.
Active in the community, Chuck served on Gainesville's City Beautification Board for almost 25 years and received an Outstanding Service Award for his contributions. He retired from the board in August 2013. 'I enjoyed working with the CBB and meeting a wide range of interesting professional people who really care about Gainesville's unique urban forest environment,' he later said. 'Leaving the board in 2013 was not an easy decision, but I'm staying in touch with the many great friends I met while working on the board over the years.'
He was an active member of the LGBTQ community and advocate for its causes. He also was an ardent supporter of local arts and cultural organizations.
Chuck is survived by too many friends to list. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. at the Baughman Center on the UF campus. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to The Gainesville Orchestra, the Hippodrome State Theatre, or the Harn Museum of Art at UF.
Arrangements are under the care of Forest Meadows Funeral Home, Gainesville, FL.

I'm very heart broken over the news about my dear Friend Chuck Woods. Chuck taught me so much about love and life. I'm truly sad about his passing. Chuck and I was together back in the 90ish for 4 beautiful years. I will miss him dearly.

I knew Chuck when I was a student at UF. He was a great guy as everyone knows. He was generous and provocative and taught me to put a bit of lemon peel in my Chock Full O' Nuts coffee. A few of his many friends became friends of mine. Last night (July 9, 2017) I had the wonderful surprise of seeing Chuck on a PBS show about the Johns Committee and gay life in the 60's and 70's on Florida University campuses and the events involving that committee and Chuck. While Chuck is gone, memories of him, his life and his work are mine forever. Thanks Chuck!

Chuck was a very caring member of humanity and citizen of Gainesville. He expressed his concerns about important topics related to national politics, human rights, landscape and urban design, the arts, etc which I would sometimes concur and sometimes disagree with, in a spirited friendship I won't forget. His impact on the people around him will be missed but not forgotten.

One of my dearest, and important, friends. He taught me so much. ... The picture chosen here captures him, the extension of him (to many, many friends), and what I tried to reciprocate back to him. I so value my time with Chuck, for two decades, and will remember him fondly.

Chuck, I regret never getting to say goodbye. You will always be with me.

Chuck, I'm sorry we didn't get to say goodbye...you really were the brother I always wanted to have: you made me feel strong, gutsy and worthy -- like nobody else has ever done. I promise I 'll keep on keeping on the path we traveled. Thanks for the guidance--and the memories.

Chuck was a great co-worker and friend. He welcome me to UF/IFAS when I first came to work at UF. Over the years we enjoyed a lot of fun times sharing some great timestogether. After his retirement he would stop by my new office smiling with that sweet laugh. Chuck I will miss you my friend.

Those who knew him will miss his intellect , his passion for the arts and his commitment to his community. He had a sharp sense of humor coupled with a sly smile. He is gone too soon.
