DAVID PHILIP, 83
Micanopy, FL - Major David Philip Etherington, U.S. Army Retired, age 83 died Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Shands Hospital. David was born in San Benito, Texas Feb. 9, 1931 to Dave and Pauline Bowser Etherington.
He attended UF as a Kappa Sigma. While in college he was a host for the Whitehouse Hotel where he met his future wife. He then served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. After retirement from the military, David was a Realtor, former owner of Danny's Barbeque, and co-owner of Sleepy Hollow Horse Farm Micanopy, FL. David was a long time member of the 1st United Methodist Church Men's Prayer Group, Gainesville Mason Lodge # 41, and in the Shriners. He was an avid Rowdy Reptile Gator fan.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Omerea "Rusty" Thomas Etherington of Micanopy, 5 children: Omerea, David, Keith, Cynthia and Timmy and 5 grandchildren: Jake, Katherine, Joseph, Caitlyn and Grace.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions can be made in David's memory to the Alachua County Humane Society, Gainesville, Florida.
Service of Remembrance will be held Thursday, May 1, 2014 at 11:00am at United Methodist Church of Micanopy. Interment will be at the Thomas Family lot in Evergreen Cemetery with Full Military Honors.

I was at a loss when told of Dave's death. I regarded him as my second father - and, the whole family as a second family.
Dave was a warm, wonderful, and loving man. When I visited him and Rusty two years ago, we had a wonderful afternoon and evening visit. We discussed old times and what was happening with our families at that time.
Dave, Rusty, and the entire Etherington family will always have my very best wishes and my prayers. They will always be held in my heart with great love.
My deepest sympathy to all of the family and close friends of a very good man.

We were greatly saddened to hear of David's passing. David loved his family. He enjoyed sharing their achievements and accomplishments with us and did so frequently. He was very proud of each and every one of his children and Rusty of course was the love of his life.

David was immensely proud of all his children and Rusty of course was the love of his life.
