Howard Guld Obituary

Howard Lee Guld

Raleigh

Howard Lee Guld (April 16, 1930 - July 9, 2014) known by many as "Papa Howard," was described by his family as luckier than a cat with nine lives. Every time you thought the end was near, he rallied back within weeks, somehow sitting on the beach with a beer in hand, or tirelessly researching his next potential stock purchase. While riddled with many health issues, he never once complained, being one of the last of a great generation of men, who felt it was their job to always be the rock of their family, and not show any weakness. But outside of this strong exterior, there was a man with a heart of gold, who lived a life of principle and integrity. His community service included President of Temple Beth Or, Board member/Treasurer of the Wake County Jewish Federation, and he and Carole were early Co-Chairmen of the drive to build a Raleigh Jewish Community Center. Howard lived his life the way it was meant to be lived. His favorite meal was his most recent, and his favorite drink was his next (especially when prepared by one of his eight grandchildren). Howard leaves behind his beloved Carole, sharing almost 58 magical years of marriage. Carole said that "together they had the luckiest of lives despite bad luck," having the happiest of memories as well as the most incomprehensible sadness with the deaths of their sweet daughter Marilyn and charismatic son Steven. To son Michael Guld, daughters Kathy Odrezin and Susan Perlis, "daddy" was a role model for strength of character, positivity and perseverance. To his eight wonderful grandchildren Matthew, Stacy, Spencer, Dana, Franklin, Stephanie, Justin and Ross, he was a source of unconditional love and unending generosity. For daughter-in-law Natalie Guld, sons-in-law Steven Odrezin and Phil Perlis, and all his nieces and nephews, he loved them as his own. His sister Felice Parker who adored him, enjoyed spending the last days of his life together, at his beloved Wrightsville Beach. When asked how he felt on his last blissful night, after enjoying a Bloody Mary and an exquisite meal with family and friends, "Papa Howard," smiled and replied with his final words: "I feel great."

A memorial service will be held at Temple Beth Or, 5315 Creedmoor Road at 2:00 pm on Sunday, July 13th followed by burial services at the Hebrew Cemetery, 450 N. State Street. The pallbearers are Howard's five grandsons Matthew Odrezin, Spencer Guld, Franklin Perlis, Justin Guld, and Ross Odrezin, as well as nephews Dr. Adam Moskowitz and Austin Moskowitz. The honorary pallbearers are Stan Fox, Bob Goldwasser, Dr. Burton Horwitz, Phillip Horwitz, Bobby Kadis, Harold Kadis, Ron Schwartz, and Al Turkel. The family will be greeting friends and relatives at Temple Beth Or Sunday, July 13th and Monday July, 14th at 7:00 pm for Shiva service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Raleigh/Cary Jewish Community Center at www.myjewishcampus.com or to Temple Beth Or, in memory of Howard.

We are so saddened by the passing of Papa Howard. It was always a breath of fresh air to visit Howard and Carole at the Perlis home or at Lake Blackshear. He certainly raised a fine family that continues in his legacy and will be missed by so many. Our thoughts, love, and prayers are with Carole and the family. George and Lynn Lee

I loved watching Howard interact with his Odrezin grandchildren during services at TBO--especially during High Holidays as the Gulds/Odrezins sat near the front facing those of us in the choir. He appeared to have a particularly loving bond with his granddaughter. It was so joyful and heart warming to watch. Blessings and comfort to Carole and the entire Odrezin family.
