Irvin Gleim Obituary

Dr. Irvin N. Gleim

Gainesville - On Wednesday, July 14, 2021, Dr. Irvin N. Gleim, peacefully passed away with his family at his side at the age of 78. Dr. Gleim was born on November 6, 1942, in Milwaukee, WI, to Dr. William and Karin Gleim and was raised in the suburbs of Chicago, IL. He received all his accounting degrees (B.S., M.S., and PhD) from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He began his college teaching career at Pittsburgh State University in 1966 and then moved to Illinois State University in 1968. Dr. Gleim often would tell his peers in academia that he "didn't need to die to go to heaven, he just joined the faculty at the Fisher School of Accounting in 1971." He retired as a Full Professor at the Fisher School of Accounting at the University of Florida in 1988 and was appointed Professor Emeritus, making him the youngest Professor Emeritus at any AAU member university. The atrium of Gerson Hall at University of Florida is named in his honor.

On May 9, 1967, he married his best friend, A. Darlene Allen, and together they raised three children Larry, Lorie, and Garrett. In 1974, they founded Gleim Publications, writing the first self-study CPA review manual at their dining room table, and using their garage as the warehouse. The popularity of Gleim CPA review materials exceeded their expectations. Dr. Gleim later expanded his product line to include review courses for other accounting certification exams, such as the CMA, CIA, and EA designations. He has helped millions of accountants advance their careers.

In 1980, he began writing aviation test preparation materials to help aspiring pilots earn their certifications. His aviation materials have been used by most civilian trained pilots at some point in their aviation careers. His materials helped so many pilots achieve their certifications that occasionally an airline pilot would see his name on the passenger manifest and ask him for an autograph.

Dr. Gleim was a quintessential professor whose passion was to help students move onward and upward in their careers. He was very welcoming to anyone who sought his advice. He had an open-door policy, and it was not uncommon to find local entrepreneurs in his office asking for his business advice. Dr. Gleim thoroughly enjoyed running his business for the last 47 years where he had the privilege of working with many great team members that made it possible for him to achieve his mission of helping accounting and aviation candidates reach their potential.

Dr. Gleim had a stellar career and received recognition and multiple awards for his many accomplishments, including the FAA's Wilber Wright Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award in Education from the National Association of Black Accountants. Some of his other career distinctions have been testifying before Congress regarding best auditing practices and having the U.S. Supreme Court confirm an appellate court opinion that was based on his published research.

When Dr. Gleim was not working, he was spending time with his children and grandchildren at Gator games, his local "farm," or his property in Alaska. Irvin loved his family and considered himself to be one of the luckiest people in the world. He attributed his happiness and success to his wife, Darlene, who not only made him an over-achiever, but also their three children and seven grandchildren. It was in Alaska, with his family at his side and the magnificent mountains he loved in the background, where he passed peacefully. He was preceded in death by his father, William, and his mother, Karin. He is survived by his wife Darlene; his three children, Larry, Lorie, and Garrett; his son-in-law, Steve Fuhr; daughter-in-law, Stacey; his grandchildren, Emily, Sara, Spencer, Anna, Lindsey, Preston, and Thomas; his sister, Kerstin; his brother, Holger; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews, all of whom he mentored and cherished. He was also blessed by the friends of his children who became "bonus children" and enriched his life in so many ways.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, July 25, 2021, at the Grace at Fort Clarke United Methodist church on Newberry Road at 2 o'clock p.m. Donations may be sent to the Fisher School of Accounting, Faculty Fund, Attention: Alison Law at 100 Bryan Hall, P.O. Box 117150, Gainesville, FL, 32611.

As a 20-year old accounting student at UF, I was struggling with whether I should switch my major to finance. A friend suggested I at least get through a quarter of Intermediate accounting before making my decision. It so happened that Dr. Gleim walked into my Intermediate Accounting class that September Day in 1975, and my life immediately changed for the better. I so enjoyed his teaching style and his "solutions approach" to accounting and life. My last quarter allowed me a few hours a week to help him publish his CPA Review. I´ll never forget one day at work he asked me if I liked to fly. When I told him I had never been in a plane, he told me to stop what I was doing and join him in his trainer plane flying off a grass airstrip. RIP Dr. Gleim. My life is so much richer (figuratively and literally) because of the inspiration you gave me.

Irvin Gleim made a significant contribution to aviation. I was one of the aviation entrepreneurs Ian Twombly mentioned in his article of remembrance who sat in his "open door office" seeking his wise counsel. My condolences to all his family. He truly was one of a kind and the world is a better place because he was in it.

I too have much sorrow for his passing. I used his method of learning since 1989 and found it to be a great learning tool for the advancement of Instrument, Commercial and now Advanced ground instructor ratings with the FAA. He would answer calls sometimes directly and find a way to answer my questions. God did bless him with the gift of teaching. Thank Irvin and his Family for believing in him as I did

I am sitting here reading the introductory to Pilot Handbook. I admire that the writing is by father/son. I happened upon the Gleim website in the opening paragraphs and saw the memorial reference with the Celebration of Life being held today. My thoughts go out to his wife Darlene and family. My wife passed 30 years ago today. I feel your void but also your warmth and pride from comments of so many that have benefited from your husbands hard work and encouragement. May you find peace and embrace the love sent from so many. Kind thoughts are with you.

As a young student at UF in 1973 Dr Gleim became my employer as part of my work-study program. He was a true mentor to me and was very important to me throughout my life. He was a great man in every sense of the word. My deepest condolences to Darlene, Larry, Lorie and Garrett. Rest In Peace Dr Gleim! You were one of a kind!

When I arrived for my interview for a faculty position at the Fisher School of Accounting in 1986, Irv was the person that drove me around town. I had used his materials to pass the CPA exam years earlier, and it felt like I was in the presence of a "rock star". Over the years, Irv's dedication and support of the Fisher School and UF has been incredible. He was always "full speed ahead". I talked with Irv often and his advice and counsel will be greatly missed.

I was Dr. Gleim's Marketing Director for 5 years in the 1990's. He was the most influential mentor I have ever had and use the techniques and practices he instilled in me to this day.

I was a young UF student and bookstore employee when this man walked in and asked for the "red books." No one knew what he was talking about....until they found me. I walked him to the section, pulled out several CPA books and asked this man if he knew they also offered software and flight training materials? I had no idea I was speaking to the author himself. A few days later, Travis Moore contacted me with a job offer. Dr. Gleim gave me my first chance at a real career, not just a job. He was strict, demanding, and also supportive and created an amazing family environment in that warehouse next to the cornfield. I cherish my time there and will never forget him.
