BARNES, JEAN RUSH
Jean Rush Barnes passed away peacefully on January 14, 2015.
Born and raised in Jacksonville, FL, Jean graduated from Landon High School in 1954. She attended Florida State University, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. Jean moved to Gainesville with her husband, Bob, in 1958, where she was a longtime employee of the School Board of Alachua County - initially as an administrative secretary at Buchholz High School and later as a bookkeeper.
While in Gainesville, she was a member of the Gainesville Junior Women's Club, the Gainesville Women's Club and Gator Boosters. More recently, she was a Hospice Volunteer and an active member of the AF Chapter P.E.O. Jean was a member of First Baptist Church of Gainesville, where she served as a trustee and a deacon. Her special interests included her family, especially her grandchildren, Haven Hospice and helping others in times of need.
Survivors include her brother, Hal 'Dan' Rush (Nancy) of Jacksonville; her sister, Gayla Rush McGovern (Patrick) of Jacksonville; her son, Robert L. Barnes, Jr. (Leland) of Tampa; her daughter, Laura B. Grabiak (Paul) of Palmetto; five grandchildren, Jason (Marisa) & Kelsey Grabiak; Walker, Fletcher and Baldwin Barnes; a niece and three nephews. Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Robert L. Barnes.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, January 23, 2015 at the First Baptist Church of Gainesville, 14105 NW 39th Avenue, Gainesville, FL 32606.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Gainesville, 14105 NW 39th Ave., Gainesville, FL 32606 or to Haven Hospice, 4200 NW 90th Blvd., Gainesville, FL 32606.
Arrangements are under the care of MILAM FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, 311 S. Main St., Gainesville, FL.

Jean and Bobby were dear friends for many years. I will miss both of them more than I can express. I am blessed to still have Barnes' in my life with Bob, Leland, Walker, Fletcher, and Baldwin, who will remain constant reminders of their parents/grandparents and the wonderful times we had together during the late 1950's and beyond…. Much love to all who loved Jean and admired her courage and her faith. She was a special lady.

My deepest condolences to the family. I will miss her smiling face, kindness, and wonderful disposition. I was lucky enough to have had the opportunity of working with her and Bob for many years in the Alachua County Public Schools. I loved them both.
