To The Dukes Family Mr. Dukes will always be fondly remembered as a truly caring and loving person. When ever I ran into his son I would ask him to tell his father that Roslyn Davis said hello, knowing he would know just who I was because he took time with all of his students, getting to know us. He loved all people, this was evident by the way he was able to convey peace to us during the turmoil of intergration. He once told us to think of him as the last three letters of his title, PAL. He was that and so much more. My prayers are with you and may you find comfort in God,s word, Philippians 4:6, 7 & 13 comes to mind. Roslyn Davis (Last 7th grade c/o LHS & EHS c/o 1975)

May God look upon your family. Your father/husband was truly a great man and one who left a mark in a community which will stand for many years to come. We were truly blessed to have a man like John Dukes Jr. in our midst and he will be sorely missed. I had the great benefit of attending school with his children and always wondered why they walked with so much pride. Years later after knowing more about their father, I could see why and as a parent that is indeed a legacy we all strive to leave. I am sure he is in heaven smiling down upon his seed...even in their darkest of moments. May God contiue to be with you.

I was saddened to learn of Mr. Dukes going to be with the Lord, but I am confident that he is now with the Lord and heard those words we all long to hear one day, "Well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of the Lord." Mr. Dukes was a great man who led Eastside High School with dignity during a very difficult period in the history of our school system. As a member of the class of 1974, I will always remember him with love and respect. I pray that God's grace will comfort your family during this very difficult time.

To John Dukes III, God placed an angel of light within our lives to brighten up our darkest days, your father was an inspiration to everyone that had the opportunity to meet him. Although God has called his angel home to rest, we will always be able to see the fruits of his labor in every person that your father had the pleasure of meeting and greeting. Yes, he is gone from us for now, and he will be truly missed by us all; but, he will live forever in all of our hearts and souls. God will never put more on us than we can bear.

He called you by name, asking about your loved ones, never forgetting a soul he ever met.
He will be greatly missed by us all.

To the Dukes Family,

It is rare that an entire family can touch one's life. When one of those family members departs, it creates an opening that can never be filled. It reminds us of how fragile life is.

To John III and Carmen, the elementary school mates with whom I opened my eyes to the world, I extend my deepeset condolences.

Likewise, to Ms. John Dukes, Jr., I acknowledge the role that your husband of 52 years played in my life as Principal of Eastside High School. A member of the second graduating class of that institution (1974), I watched and learned from Mr. Dukes what it meant to be a leader of men and women and a role model to rising young adults.

It is now that these realities come to mind, and I wanted to share them with you.

May the Creator sustain you during this period of grief.

With deepest sympathy,

Brooks
