RICHARD STREIFF Obituary

STREIFF,
DR. RICHARD (DICK)
Dr. Richard (Dick) Streiff MD of Gainesville, Florida passed away on February 14, 2018 at the age of 88. He was born June 1, 1929 in Highland, Illinois. He graduated from Highland High School, Washington University in Saint Louis, MO, and attended Universitat Basel medical school in Basel, Switzerland, before completing his internship and residency at Boston City Hospital (Harvard Medical School). Dr. Streiff was a member of the Gainesville medical community for the past 50 years, becoming a faculty member of the University of Florida College of Medicine in 1968.
Through the University's Veterans Affairs affiliation, he held prominent VA roles as Chief of Hematology, Chief of Medicine, and Associate Chief of Staff for Education. As a Professor of Medicine and an internationally recognized researcher, Dr. Streiff has trained thousands of individuals - medical students, resident physicians, clinical researchers, and medical school and hospital executives. These grateful individuals now look back knowing how fortunate they were to learn from one of the nation's best. While teaching has been his primary emphasis, Dr. Streiff's sensitivity and compassionate spirit has made him the quintessential role model of the academic physician whose research has focused on cancer and iron-overload related diseases. He was, in fact, one of the country's foremost experts in the treatment of iron overload. Dr. Ray Bergeron, Professor of Medicinal Chemistry, credits Dr. Streiff for his critical role in the development of four new drugs that have been taken into human clinical trials for the treatment of these conditions.
Although he 'retired' from the University of Florida and Malcom Randall VA Medical Center in 2001, Dr. Streiff continued 'giving back' for over a decade by volunteering his time at the VA Medical Center. He continued to treat VA patients, consult with colleagues on difficult cases, interview applicants for residency positions, and help those who sought his counsel or who had questions and concerns about health issues. He always made time for anyone in need no matter how busy his schedule. He was not only a giving individual but also a walking encyclopedia of medical information.
Dr. Streiff was devoted to his family and faith. He is survived by his wife of over 58 years, Jenny Kerr Streiff; his three children, Dr. Michael Streiff (Lauren) of Owing Mills, MD, Andrew Streiff (Connie) of Charlotte, NC; and Gabrielle Gause (Mark) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; as well as four grandchildren, Zachary, Madeline, Samantha and William.
He was a member of the Vestry and a longtime parishioner of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Gainesville FL. An internationally known Winston Churchill scholar, Dr. Streiff was the coordinator of the Churchill Centre of North Florida. He had visited almost every place Churchill has been and hosted Churchill's granddaughter on her visit here.
Whether at UF's College of Medicine or the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center, Dr. Streiff was an institution. Ever cheerful and upbeat, he was universally liked and admired. He touched and enriched the lives of countless patients, colleagues, and staff. He WAS the doctor's doctor.
A memorial service will be held on March 3, 2018, at 2PM, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 100 NE 1st Street, Gainesville FL 32601. For those who wish, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, Alzheimer's Association, or the Gainesville Fisher House.
Arrangements are in the care of MILAM FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, 311 S. Main St., Gainesville, Florida, 352-376-5361, www.milamfh.com.

Jenny's Poem

Connie Streiff for Jenny Streiff

September 26, 2019

Written by Jenny Kerr Streiff
The Village, Rose Court, Gainesville, Florida

Once upon a time long ago. A boy walked up a trail in the woods. He was seeking something different; something unusual; something strange. The trees were all so familiar. The flowers dotted over the ground lush and friendly. Would he ever find that mysterious object he desired? Or was he defined to always see the same familiar greenery and mosses?
Suddenly, there came a startling noise; up high somewhere. In a tree? In the vast cloud-laden sky? Where and what was it? He crept onward keeping his eyes and ears alert for any clue. Suddenly a deer leapt out from the greenery and spoke to him: Bay, Bay! Turn back and go home! The woods are dangerous! Go right home now! Startled, the boy turned and ran back where he came from. His family was there to cherish him.

Andrew and I had the pleasure of visiting Jenny over the weekend. She looks great. Enjoys activities and playing Bingo. Oh, of course, their Sing Alongs We bought a few crossword puzzles which she loves to do. I noticed on the coffee table a few more poems she had written this month. I asked if I can borrow them, her reply, You may have them! I'd like to share this in our memorial book. We both like to go back from time to time and revisit all the pictures, beautiful words everyone has written and have a good cry/laughter of the years of happiness and joy.

Written by Jenny Kerr Streiff

The girl walked slowly down the path. The trees created a pleasant, cool canopy through the woods. She was alone and lonely. Where were other people? Was anyone nearby? Would this path lead her to a familiar surrounding? Or was it leading to nothingness?
Suddenly an owl hooted above! The girl looked up into the leafy canopy...Where was she? Would she find her way to familiar surroundings?
Yes, she was scared, but she padded onward. Suddenly, rounding a bend, she spotted sunlight and openess ahead! As she exited The gloom of the Forrest, she found herself in a park, with other people milling about and she joined the gathering. Welcome said a man nearby. Join us on our walk to lunch, if you like! We'll be home soon, safe and sound. It was her neighbor. She was safe again and not alone.
** As I read and reread this, I thought, was this young girl, Jenny? Maybe I'm overthinking this. Part of me wonders what goes through Peoples mind when they're faced with losing their lifetime partner and soulmate. Everyone reacts, feels, shows their emotions differently. I pray she finds comfort knowing her family adores her. Dick is watching over Jenny every step of the way.

Andrew went to visit his Mom, Jenny over the weekend. They had a nice visit. She's in a good place and is happy. He couldn't help but notice some poems she has been writing sitting on the coffee table. He asked if it would be alright to have one. She pleasingly said, yes. I'd love to share her words filled with beautiful words and deep meaning.

There is a warm and familiar sun during the day. The air is quiet and comforting. As each afternoon wears on, the cooling breeze arises and the warmth of the sun is alleviated. Dusk ushers in the peace and quiet of dusk.
Occasionally a symbolic moon rises into the Heavens and brings dreams to the surface. Sleep is imminent and I seek the comfort of dreamland
Good night friends and family.
I Love You All

FIRST ANNIVERSARY IN HEAVEN
FEBRUARY 14, 2019

We shared so much happiness in times of yesterday,
And to say how much I miss you,
I could never find a way.
I wish with all my heart
That you were here with me,
And we could share the laughter,
That there always used to be.
I know we'll meet again
In another life elsewhere,
And those very special times,
We once again will share.

MY FIRST CHRISTMAS IN HEAVEN I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below, With tiny lights, like Heaven's Stars, Reflecting on the snow. The sight is so spectacular, Please wipe away those tears, for I am spending Christmas with Jesus this year.I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear, But the sounds of music can't compare with the Christmas Choir up here.I have no words to tell you, The joy their voices bring, For it is beyond description, to hear the Angels sing.I know how much you miss me. I see the pain inside your heart, But I am not so far away. We aren't so far apart, so be happy for me dear ones. You know I hold you dear, and be glad I'm spending Christmas, with Jesus this year.I send you a special gift, from my heavenly home above. I send you each a memory of, My undying love. After all LOVE is the gift, More precious than pure gold. It was always most important in the stories our Lord Told.

Our Weekend in Highland, Illinois
October 2014

Connie and Andrew Streiff

October 16, 2018

In October 2014, Andrew and I had the honor, on the behalf of Dick to attend a weekend celebration in His hometown of Highland, Illinois. Starting with the High School Friday night football game, where Andrew (representing Dick) and the other Hall of Fame inductees were driven in a golf cart across the field and applauded with a standing ovation. They were recognized for their many great accomplishments throughout the years. Saturday morning they had a beautiful breakfast in their honor. Met so many people that loved Dad. Andrew made a speech and thanked everyone for selecting his Dad. Dick was then inducted into the Hall of Fame, Arts and Sciences. We couldn't be any prouder. We enjoyed the brisk fall weekend going down Memory Lane
The pasture was beautiful, Grandma and Grandpa's house had some renovations done. But I know they felt our presence. It still has that warm comfortable look. We drove to Silver Lake and took pictures, so calming. Andrew was reminiscing about Michael, Gabi and himself and all the great times they shared. Those memories will never leave them.
The last place we visited was the Homestead, the Founder of PET Milk. What a wonderful weekend! We are so blessed.

Saying I love you is something all a person ever needs. Hugs. Lets face it, we can all use one.
You have a gift of listening and Dad certainly had some stories to share with you. The colorful birds flying by his window, entertained him. It enlightened him to hear you play the piano. Encouraging him to sing along, made him happy.
He looked forward to a delicious snack which was another gift talent you gave from your heart. Your fresh baked blondies were his favorite. The beautiful blanket you made for him, took the chill off of his legs. A constant reminder you were there. Praying together brought him a sense of calmness. Your contagious smile warmed his heart.
Your patience demonstrated love and commitment.
Your journal you wrote in starting from earth to glory, are now fond memories that we hold dear to us.
It was an honor to hear you and your sisters singing, praying at Dads Memorial.
From the bottom of our hearts we will forever be grateful you came into our lives.
Love,
Connie and Andrew

Im so sorry to hear of Dr. Streiffs passing. I worked with him on several projects at the VA in Gainesville.
We all loved him. In addition to be a great doctor, and leader, he was truly a good hearted person.
One of the things that we all looked forward to was his annual Easter Egg Hunt. He would hide Easter eggs around the copy room and Directors Suite and we would all go searching for them.
He did many things but that was one of the many things he did for Us.
He will be missed.

Sunset
Softly the rays of sunset fall
On things of earth both great and small;
Softly the golden streams of light
Bring down to earth the suns Good Night.
Then slowly, softly, Red and gold
Mingle in loveliness untold;
A touch of green and faded blue
Add glory to this heavenly view.
The stars come out to say Good Night
To the leaving suns sweet golden light;
They hover mid a sea of pink
Til in the West they see him sink.
The colours fade, the darkness comes.
No longer now the beetle hums.
The day is gone till dew at dawn
Brings down to earth the suns Good Morn.

To my dear children, grand-children, and Great grand-children in Switzerland and the U.S.A.

Dear Children,
Your Uncle and Great Uncle, Dick has been kind enough to put together a collection of poems which I have written in the past 66 years. A few of them are serious, like Staff Tea in the Folger Shakespeare Library , which is the only Sonnet and was accepted by the Villager, A literary magazine published in Bronxville N.Y. Two or three others won prizes in Poetry Contests. I must add that I was, I am sure, very serious about the earliest poems. The first poem that was printed was written during an exam at school (Roedean) in 1915; and another, The Garden Wall, appeared in the magazine of the Royal College Of Music, London, England.
But most of these poems were written for fun to amuse the family or to mark some special occasion.
There is one about my elder daughter, now Mary Bucher; another about my younger daughter, now Jenny Streiff.
There are poems about my grand-daughter Jenette in America, Britta in Switzerland, and my son, David, when in Germany.
This collection would never have been assembled without the help and encouragement of my two sons-in-law, Dres Bucher and Dick Streiff, and I am deeply indebted to both of them.
Your affectionate mother, Grand-mother, and Great-Grand-mother,
Jessica M. Kerr

I loved the life you gave us!

Today marks two months since you answered our Lords call and went home to be with him in Heaven. There is not a day that has gone by where we not have thought of you. At times I reach for the phone to call you and then realize that you will only be speaking to me through my prayers. I feel your presence and comforting ways in all that I do. We are remembering all the good times we had together and how it was such a pleasure visiting you and helping you in a small way to be comfortable over the last few months you were with us on earth.
I pray each night to our Lord and to you that you will bless us and make our lives spiritually complete.

Our basket of love for you

Inside it you will find our hearts.
You will also find memories
A collection of thoughts and special moments we have known.

You will also find these promises;
That we will try and do our best in life and follow our chosen paths.
We will learn through our mistakes
And set a good example for others.
We will keep you close in our hearts.

Around the basket of love, we placed flowers. We chose all the pastel colors to give it that special spring time touch and recapture the holiday spirit.

In church this morning, after mass, we burned two candles. One requesting Jesus to deliver this basket to you. The second was prayers for Jenny and my son, Kevin.

Christ has risen to a new life, his resurrection gives us hope of eternal life.

As we travel life's paths, we'll often come across your footprints,
We know we have someone showing us the way.

A Letter To My Family

I am happy now. All pain is gone and loneliness no more.
Family and friends were waiting for me when I passed through the door.
They were smiling when they saw me.
We walked hand and hand down the streets of pure gold.
I know you miss me, and your heart still aches.
But our ties are not broken
Our memories don't break.
Remember this isn't the end
You still have each other.
Stay strong with faith and the Lord.
We'll be together again.
My children and family were all that I ever needed. I loved being a Dad. God was good to me.
Always be thankful for the gifts you receive.
Never take anything for granted. Do all you can do to help others. Live life to the fullest.
Having lived my life on earth, I know what life was really about. My children seeing you from afar, isn't any different from before. Now I am in a heavenly place and shining like a star.

On February 14, 2018, approximately 5:30am, one of my favorite people in the world, Dr. Richard Streiff transitioned from earth to glory. While my heart is heavy, I'm happy in my spirit that he has laid down the cares of this world, never to be burdened anymore.
I knew him to be a kind, loving, gentle, gracious and grateful man. He always expressed how much he loved and cared for me. Up until the end he was expressing how important I was in his life. Before his meals at the table, he would say, "God please let her know how much I love and appreciate the loving care she gave me.
On his last day of life, I prayed that he knew how much I cared.
God, be the glory for the great things he allowed Richard to accomplish in his life (which was tremendous) I thank God for allowing me to know and spend time with him.
Amen Amen

My condolences to your mom and family members.

Dear Andrew,
I didn't think there could be another man other than my brother jand husband who I would admire and respect. Then, your father came along.
What a pleasure it was to be with him. I learned a lot, laughed a lot and was helped a lot by him.
His interests became mine, all except mead. I remember him showing off his homemade brew and sharing some with us.
The crowd at the service was a testimony to the respect and love that your father earned during his long tenure in the communities of church and medicine.
It was nice to see you and Connie, even if the moment was bittersweet.
He was proud of You, Michael and Gabi and always brought me up to speed about your news.
We will keep up with Jenny. I have asked Gabi for her Caretaker's name and phone number.

I was the Director at the VA Hospital from 2007-2012 and came to know your father quite well, often going to lunch with him. I had tremendous admiration and respect for him. His office was just down the hall from mine and I would often stop to chat with him and it was always a learning experience for me. While my mother in law was in her last days your dad was a tremendous resource to me explaining what the oncologists were doing to make her more comfortable.
Last year my daughter who lives in DC was hospitalized and visited by a team of hematologists and I asked them if they knew of your dad, they looked in an amazed way and said not only have they heard of him but his son was an esteemed member of their service at John Hopkins.
My wife and your mother were both members of the UF Medical Guild and your mom was one of the backbones of the organization. We would often attend pot lucks with them. It was sad to us when your mom could no longer participate.
Lastly, my wife and I were unable to attend the celebration of life as I was out of town, but I want you to know from me what you already know and that is your dad was a Giant at UF and in the field of hematology. More important, he was known by every MD that I associated with as "One of the good guys" and a Physician to be admired and respected.

We would sit and wait for the deer to visit us.
