Roy was a scholar at the Liverpool Institute High School for Boys circa 1948. I sat just before him on the tiered benches of the chemistry prep room. When we had quick tests,I changed papers with him. I never bothered to listen to the answers. I just gave him the maximum mark. As for my dreadful efforts, he always handed back paper with a charming smile and never once did he express an opinion on my results. He was always friendly to me.
