SARAH PRICE Obituary

PRICE, SARAH HAZEL

WHITEHURST

Sarah Hazel Whitehurst Price peacefully passed away Friday evening, July 20th at her home on Payne's Prairie surrounded by her loving family.

Sarah was born on Glen Springs Road in Gainesville on October 25, 1923 to Charles and Lucretia Whitehurst who founded the Whitehurst Dairy on Payne's Prairie. She attended elementary school in Micanopy and graduated from P.K. Young High School in Gainesville. Later she attended business school in Jacksonville. She met the love of her life, James Price, when he came to work at the Dairy in 1939. They were married on May 24, 1941 and built their first home on the farm property that year. It was a very humble 20'x 20' 4-square one bedroom home with an outhouse. As their family grew with 4 children they added a bath and sleeping porch. The day-to-day operation of the family business was taken over by Sarah and James Price in l956 after the death of her father. As a young child Sarah fell in love with the prairie and dreamed of building a home on the hill next to Highway 441. Her dream came true in l962 when they constructed the red brick home which she loved and lived in until her death. While the dairy was closed in l964 James and Sarah continued to operate the beef cattle ranch until l972. At that time, they retired and sold the land fulfilling their dream of traveling the United States. Of the 50 states, Alaska was the last they visited and the one they loved enough to build a home. For 28 years they continued to visit during the summertime. In addition to traveling, Sarah also enjoyed playing piano, making crafts and cooking for friends and loved ones. She became a Christian as a young girl and was currently a member of Southwest United Methodist Church.

Sarah and James Price were happily married for 64 years before his death. She is survived by her children Kathryn Morris (Bill) of Apopka, Linda Price of Chipita Park, CO, Alvin Price (Diane) of Micanopy and Earl Price (Becky) of Bradenton. She had 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren with one on the way. She is also survived by her loving caregivers Angela Smart and Diane Goodrich. She was pre-deceased by caregiver Mary Marks.

In lieu of flowers the family would like donations to be made to Florida United Methodist Children's Home www.fumch.org or your favorite charity.

A visitation will be held at the funeral home Sunday from 2-4PM, where the Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 23, 2012. Interment will be private. Milam Funeral and Cremation Services 311 S. Main Street Gainesville, FL 32601 (352) 376-5361.

Dear Alvin, Diane and Family,
We only heard of your mothers death today and do regret that we could not be with you to celebrate her life. She was a loving and interesting person and taught me about life on this Prairie. When we first moved here to the site of her parents dairy farm, She secretly placed beautifully washed and polished vegetables from her garden on our porch. The salmon from Alaska was special! I saw my first wild cat in her presence. May she rest in peace.
