WILLIAM PFAFF Obituary

PFAFF, WILLIAM W.

Dr. William W. Pfaff died on March 6, 2014, the result of side effects of prostate carcinoma. He was the son of Dr. Norman Joseph Pfaff and Eleanor Blakesly Wells Pfaff, born in Rochester NY on August 14, 1930. He was educated at Harvard University, the University of Buffalo-College of Medicine, followed by post-graduate years at the University of Chicago, the National institutes of Health and Stanford University. He joined the faculty of the University of Florida in 1965 and was promoted to full professor in 1971.

He was married to Patricia Ann Clark Pfaff for 53 years. They have four daughters, Nancy Loftus, Karen Fluman, Peggy Pfaff-Walton and Cathy Sak, and nine grandchildren.

He was best known for his experience in organ transplantation, performing the first successful kidney transplant in Florida in 1966 and with his medical colleagues, Bob Cade and Dana Shires organized the first transplant program in Florida. At the same time he was active in conducting a practice in general surgery which he regarded as his primary role, transplantation his avocation.

He was a member of the American Surgical Association, the Southern Surgical Association, the Transplantation Society, the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and state and local medical groups. He served as the president of the Alachua County Medical Society, the Southeastern Organ Procurement Foundation and the United Network for Sharing, the national organization overseeing organ transplantation. He also was president of the Florida chapter of the Kidney Foundation and the End-Stage-Renal-Disease program. Dr. Pfaff will be remembered for his leadership of bringing people together, and the notion of sharing for the greater good with respect to organ procurement and transplantation.

He and his family loved their lives in Gainesville, cherished their friends and were happy with their educational years and their lives that have followed. Dr. Pfaff was a voracious reader and never stopped learning. He was an avid sailor, the original "foodie", and made a point of finding joy in every day.

Services will be private. To honor his memory, donations may be made to Doctors Without Borders (www.doctorswithoutborders.org) or Haven Hospice, E.T. York Care Center, 4200 NW 90th Blvd, Gainesville, FL, 32606.

I was thinking about this man today.
He was my transplant surgeon in 1990. He also took my parathyroid out and transplanted part of it my arm 6 months after. Told my husband today that he saved me in many ways.
Sorry to hear He is gone now. He was a real trailblazer for many. He saved many lives. A wonderful man indeed.

Gave me my first medical job, and always a great personal example ....still using some of the same expressions with my patients and staff that he did! He showed me the joy of being a general surgeon and is one of the reasons I became one. Still in awe of his interpersonal cognitive and techical skills to this day.

To the Pfaff Family,
When I received the call that Dr. Pfaff was in Hospice, I am glad I followed my heart instead of my mind. He may not have known I was there physically, but he knew spiritually. The years working with him were that of pleasure. He was always kind and pleasant with that special SMILE! My first and last Gator football game was due to his generosity. He would always bring me match books from various transplants to add to my collection.
We will miss him down here but heaven has gained a special angel!
With Deepest Respect.

I came to know Dr. Pfaff working first as LifeLink Foundation's controller and then as its CFO. He was a great volunteer who always gave freely of his time and knowledge, and he was a key member of our Board for many years, known to weigh issues very carefully before speaking with great economy and precision. In my personal dealings with him, I always found him to be a good humored, kind, dignified, and honorable man who treated everyone with great respect without regard for their relative station or background. In short, Dr. Pfaff was truly a class act, and he will be greatly missed.

I am another of the surgeons trained by Dr. Pfaff. To paraphrase Gabriel Garcia Marquez: Don't cry because it's over; be happy because it occurred. Thank you Dr. Pfaff. Charles Neustein, M.D.

Dear Pfaff family,
In 1973 Bill along with Bob Cade gave me the opportunity to be involved in renal transplantation research and clinical care. I worked closely with Bill rounding daily with him as he taught his residents and medical students while taking wonderful care of his patients treating them with kindness and respect. He gave me an opportunity that I have never forgotten. I was an older student and at that time being older was a barrier to medical school entrance. He was pivotal in my UF medical school acceptance and now I'm in my 31st year on the faculty as a professor of pediatrics.

He touched my life and he was a role model for me throughout my career to touch the lives of children and their families.

We will all miss him,

Always,
John A. Nackashi, MD
