Bobby Frank Patterson, 75, of Galax, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017, at North Carolina Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was born on April 1, 1942, to John and Ruby Patterson, in the Coal Creek community of Carroll County.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Janet Igo Patterson; their daughter of Christiansburg, Keri Beth Barker (spouse Joe Barker) and son of Winston-Salem, N.C., Jonathan Andrew Patterson (spouse Sheena Patterson); two grandsons; and two granddaughters.
A funeral was held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2017, at Snow Hill Baptist Church (1423 Snow Hill Rd., Galax) with Pastor Ernie Smith officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

I heard about Bobby much too late to come there. He was a nice man, a good picker, and a great producer. He did my last three projects and Im so glad I got to fill in many time with his Band the great Highlanders. This was such a surprise to me: Id talke with him at the contest this year and he was doing very well. Truly sorry for the family and their loss.

I was quite shocked at the news, and so grateful that God allowed me to see and visit Bobby for a few minutes at the Heritage Shop this year on my way into town to go to the Felts Park for the Fiddlers Convention! My condolences to the family. My siblings and I grew up with Bobby. We all went to school together at Coal Creek. Bobby lived just below us within hollering distance. Bobby and the Highlanders played a couple of family reunions we had atop Matt's Mountain in Elk Creek. We loved him! Bobby told us that our dad (Willard) influenced him as he decided to get into the recording business. I remember the old reel to reel recorder that our dad had bought and recorded lots of picking sessions that Bobby and his dad did. Lots of memories! May God comfort your hearts during this sad time.

Living next door to Bobby was a blessing for me. Hardly a day went by as young boys spending time together, building wagons with wooden wheels, model airplanes, roaming the hills, following the creeks and of course the music lessons, working the farm with his daddy. Later on he and I both taking flying lessons and flying together. He was my camera man as we buzzed the neighborhood one Sunday morning. I still have the film. But most of all still have the memories, in which I was reflecting on the very morning, only to learn of his passing a few hours later. His whole family was an inspiration to me. My condolence to his family knowing they can take comfort in that he touched so many lives in a positive way. So long old pal-fly high.

Bobby has a sweet soul & he's an original! I met him when I was in Mrs B's (Burkholder) class at the high school. He was always friendly, smiling, asking about the family, & helping me find what I needed in the store, & asking if Dan's playing any (plays doghouse bass).

Bobby's sudden death. He will be missed buy his community and extended family. I will always remember him fondly at the family reunions. What a wonderful man Bobby Patterson was. He gave me my first job as a teenager in high school in 1989. I continued to work with Bobby for several years, teaching cake decorating classes for him and working at the Heritage Shoppe. When I started my own family I'd still see him from time to time and even end up singing at the same event with him sometimes. He always had such a big heart and a was wonderful to know as my boss, friend and co-music enthusiast! He is the best of us and no doubt was ready to meet his Savior! I'll never forget this man and look forward to the day we can sing together on Heaven's shore! Love and prayers for Janet and the family.
