Alphonse Mascherino Obituary

SOMERSET, Pa. (AP) - A priest who left the Roman Catholic church and founded a nondenominational chapel to honor the victims of hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 has died of cancer.

The Rev. Alphonse Mascherino died Friday at a hospice in Somerset, according to Archbishop Ramzi Musallam of the Catholic Church of the East.

Mascherino, who was 69, bought a former Lutheran church and converted it into the Flight 93 Memorial Chapel, in honor of 40 passengers and crew killed when the hijacked airliner crashed during the Sept. 11, 2011 terrorist attacks.

Then Altoona-Johnstown Bishop Joseph Adamec said Mascherino's work was commendable but not compatible with his Catholic priesthood.

Mascherino went on to become a bishop in the North American Old Roman Catholic Church, which doesn't recognize the Catholic pope's authority.

Miller Funeral Home and Crematory in Somerset is handling Mascherino's arrangements.

I just learned of the role that Father Mascherino played in memorializing the bravery of the Flight 93 Patriots from the below posted Federalist blog. Thank God for folks like Father Mascherino and the Flight 93 heroes.

I feel so blessed, and honored to have gotten the chance to meet Reverend Mascherino in Shanksville, PA while performing with the North Star Kids. To this day, he is the most selfless man I have ever met, and I feel inspired by him everyday. Reverend Mascherino left behind a beautiful legacy - the Flight 93 Memorial Chapel - and his light will continue to shine over the chapel, and all who enter. Rest in Peace.

Do not be afraid I am with you
I have called you each by name
Come and follow me, I will bring you home
I love you and you are mine

I was stunned and saddened to read in Palm Springs that Fr. Mascherino died. We were the best of friends in the seminary and saddly lost contact over the years, speaking briefly perhaps once a year. Alphonse was the most talented, energetic, intelligent, passionate, gifted human being I have ever knew. I'm sure he is stirring things up in heaven already. Cheers! Fr. Robert Johnston

I. Met father Al eight years ago, ringing the chapel bell as my group passed his chapel, and have been friends since. I have never known a man, other than my father, that I have loved and respected as much as father. Rest father Al, your devotion to the chapel, and the motorcycle community will never be forgotten. You were a true friend, and I will miss you every day.
