Andrew Evanko Obituary

Andrew Donald "Andy" Evanko, 64, of Curwensville passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at his residence after a lengthy illness.

Born May 1, 1955 in Clearfield, he was the son of Andrew A. and Rose Agnes (Mayersky) Evanko.

He was a 1973 graduate of the Curwensville Area High School and received his Bachelor's degree from Dickinson's College in Carlisle, Pa.

Mr. Evanko was first employed as a customer advocate and salesperson for Target Sportswear. He was then employed by the Curwensville Area School District, having worked initially in the Guidance Department and more recently as the food service manager.

He was a member of the St. Timothy Roman Catholic Church in Curwensville.

Mr. Evanko was actively involved in the football program in the Curwensville Area School District for 35 years.

He started out doing films before coaching junior high football under coach Lyle Domico. Then, he moved up the ranks and served as a varsity assistant under both coach Lyle Domico and Alan Nichol.

He assumed the head coach position in 2000. During his career, he led the Golden Tide football program to 150 victories.

On Nov. 21, 1987, he wed the former Tina M. Malone, who survives along with two daughters, Patricia Evanko of Luthersburg and Desiree Singer and her husband, Bill of Clearfield.

Also surviving are a granddaughter, Brooklynn Knepp of Curwensville and a brother, John Evanko of Curwensville.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Donald Andrew Evanko.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the St. Timothy Roman Catholic Church in Curwensville with Father A. Stephen Collins as Celebrant.

Burial will be in the Crown Crest Memorial Park in Hyde.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 8 p.m. Sunday at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home Inc. of Curwensville and again from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. Monday when the procession will depart for the church.

In the years since Andy's passing I have frequently traveled through Curwensville on my way to Elk County. Each time I pass the football field memories of our Dickinson days come to mind, and I can't help but smile. Please know that Andy has not been forgotten.

One of the finest classmates from 1973. He was kind, funny, and smart. I will always think fondly of Andy.

Andy Evanko...all honor to his name. Andy and I and a cast of 21 additional characters formed a bond some 46 years ago when we were fraternity pledges together at Dickinson College. Going through the pledging process in those days meant learning to support as well as lean on each other. The bonds from those four years together can never be broken, and I consider myself a better person for having the privilege of sharing that time with Andy. I'm glad....

I've known Andy for about 40 years . . . for about 30 of those years, we both worked for the same company.
.
While we did not work in the same department, our jobs were inter-related to the extent that we had business-matters ' between us on a regular basis . . .usually 2 3 times a week, if not more.
.
Sometimes after our business ' was concluded, we found or MADE time to talk football.
So, I got to know about Andy, The FOOTBALL COACH .
.
His success ' ON the Field is well-documented . . . it works out to an average of 8 W s and only 3 L s per season during his 19 seasons as Head Coach . . .
a legacy ' any coach would be proud of !
.
But BETTER Than That, I got to know the
legacy ' of Andy The PERSON . . . which is even BETTER ! ! ! . . . BECAUSE:
A - During all of our business-matters ', he was always GREAT to work with.
B - I never heard anyone at work or anywhere
else say anything bad about Andy.
C - I got to learn of his Coaching
Philosophy ' . . . which is really
quite simple . . .
1 - WINNING Is IMPORTANT . . .
2 WINNING by Doing Things THE RIGHT WAY is
MORE IMPORTANT . . .
{ One of Andy's Pet-Peeves was Coaches who
appeared to have a Win At ANY Cost /
Win At ALL Costs attitude . }
.
Whether or not they realized it at the time it was happening, the several ? hundred young men { and, in recent years, young ladies } that played for Coach Andy ' were indeed
fortunate / blessed ' to have been in school during his time there . . . because we DON'T always WIN . . . and when we DON'T WIN, it is important to Get Back To Work . . . so we can WIN the next time . . .
They will learn to appreciate this
more and more as the years go on.
.
Each year Andy was Coach ', we could see him being quoted in The Clearfield Progress both during pre-season practice and after each game during the season about how the goal ' for
his ' teams was quite simple . . .
practice hard . . . and smart . . .
so that the team will be a little better when they LEAVE the field than they were when they went ONTO it.
.
And shouldn't that be the goal of all of us . . . to be just a little bit better TODAY than we were YESTERDAY ?
.
ANDY EVANKO . . . FOOTBALL Coach / LIFE Coach
. . . he will be missed by MANY.

.
With Much Admiration and Respect,

Tina,
Love doesn't end with dying
Or leave with the last breath.
For someone you've loved deeply
Love doesn't end with death

So as we take our paths in life
And face what is to come
Remember in those times of strife
Love keeps him living on

Don't fret about his passing
Don't cry that he's not here
Think of all the pleasant times
And know love keeps him near

Remember, passing through your days
The love between you two
And fill your mind with all the ways
That love keeps him here with you

For love doesn't end with dying
Or leave with the last breath.
For someone you've loved deeply
Love doesn't end with death
