Today, 3 yrs later I still miss your love and guidance as my big brother. You left behind a strong family and you should be proud. Now that your journey is over you can rest. I gave you that name Stands on Hill on a trip we took to Virginia we did so many together I miss that. May God hold you tight in his arms and bless you and your family.

I love and have respect for John. We traveled to Maryland together almost every month for about 20 years to a Native American non profit center. We spent 1000s of hours talking. He always talked about his family and close friends, and his love for them.
I called him by his family name "Jr". At the Native center he was given the Native name "Stands on Hill" by two National recognized Spiritual leaders many years ago. This name was to capture in the old days they would have someone on top of a high hill watching the area to see who approached the community, as a way of protecting the women and children in the group. They felt this name represented his character.
Jr was well known in the native community as a very strong, yet gentle man that could be depended on for help when needed. He went through 100s of sweat lodges seeking God's guidance for his life. Jr was also a "Sun Dancer" where he placed himself during the event through volunteer suffering and trials while asking God to hear his prayers for his family and his people.
People will speak of Jr for many years in the future with respect and love and will be missed.

Mr. Steele was a good man. Very well respected by everyone. You could always turn to him with any problem. I always respected Mr. Steele. The funny thing about him I will always remember and those that attend detention hall will remember are those words. "3 Licks or a hour." I always took the hour. Mr. Steele you will be missed. I have thought about you over the years and I am 62 now. You will always live in our memories as a good man and mentor.
