Maryann Lyman Obituary

Maryann S. Lyman

(1956-2022)

Florence, MA - On her favorite holiday, Halloween, Maryann (Slattery) Lyman, 66, passed peacefully into heaven from Cooley Dickinson Hospital after a courageous effort to defeat the cancer diagnosed in August. The daughter of John William and Marie Edna (Diemand) Slattery, she was born on September 4, 1956, in Northampton. From an early age she was known by many as "Mud." She attended Annunciation School and graduated from St. Michael's High School. For 42 years, she worked at the VA Medical Center, working her way up from Mail Room Clerk to Chief, Business Office Section.

Maryann loved to bake, garden, bird-watch and knit. Since she always had to be doing something, her idea of a "relaxing vacation" was to re-wallpaper at least one room of the house. She thoroughly enjoyed the family trips to the camp in Hartland, Maine. After retirement, she was the unofficial "Neighborhood Watch," and de-cluttering queen extraordinaire. Every New Year's Day, she made the family's traditional New Year's bread to share with family and friends. She will be remembered for her optimism and sense of humor, her insistence on doing it right the first time, and her extraordinary devotion to, and love of, family.

Maryann and the love of her life, Dennis C. Lyman, celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary on October 6.

Maryann was predeceased by her parents, and her brother, John Jr. She is survived by her husband, Dennis; her two beloved sons, David, and Matthew; RJ, the family cat; and her dear sister, Jane Slattery. Maryann treasured her clan of cousins and their families as lifelong "partners in crime," and friends she made along the way were held close to her heart.

A memorial service will be held at 12pm on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at Ahearn Funeral Home, with burial to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours will precede the service from 10am to 12pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you take a loved one out to lunch.

Jane, Dennis and boys, I'm so very sorry about Maryanne. She was bursting with energy with a great dry wit that cut to the chase every time. She was also very kind and generous and the love she had for you, her family, was very hard to miss. Also, she loved her cousins, the Diemand boys like brothers and there would always be the threat of hijinks when they all got together! Thinking of you all and wishing you peace.

So sorry to see Maryann is no longer with us. I worked with her for several years at the VA when she was clerk of the outpatient mental hygiene unit and knew her well. Sad her retirement didn´t last many more years as I expected it would. Condolences to her family including Dennis and Jane. She´s in a better place.
