GEORGE MATTHEWS Obituary

GEORGE MATTHEWS George Eric Matthews, age 76, of Bel Air, Maryland, passed away on Friday, June 27, 2025. He was born November 24th 1948 in Fort Riley, Kansas to the late Eric Frederick Matthews and Lelah Aileen (Jewell) Matthews. George was a fourth-generation Army veteran, he served honorably for eight years in the U.S. Army as a physician, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After graduating high school in Bel Air, Maryland George moved to Kansas to be near his maternal grandparents and attended Kansas State University, where he was involved in the JROTC program. He continued his education at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), earning his medical degree and embarking on a distinguished career as an OB-GYN. He practiced for over 25 years, with the majority of his work spent in Garden City, Kansas, caring for countless women and welcoming new life into the world. George had a passion for history, particularly the Civil War. He spent his free time on hobbies such as racing remote control cars, flying kites, tinkering on his large-scale model train set, cruising his American muscle cars, and trying to find his car keys or wallet. One of his favorite pastimes was cheering on the Kansas State Wildcats, especially during the years his daughters attended college there. He is survived by his loving daughters, Angie Wilkinson and Kristen Matthews, Angie's husband Nick Wilkinson and Kristen's fiancé, Lawrence Geipe; one granddaughter, Stephanie; and his sister, Elaine Macko. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eric and Aileen Matthews. A proud patriot, devoted father, and an accomplished physician, he was also a loyal friend to so many. George's legacy of service, kindness, and being the most fun person in any room will not be forgotten. In lieu of flowers, contributions in George's memory may be made to Genesis Family Health formerly known as Mexcian-American Ministries in Garden City, KS.
