Lynn Lockhart Obituary

Lynn A Lockhart of Gilroy, CA passed away from cancer on March 21, 2025 at the age of 78. He is survived by his Monterey High School sweetheart and wife of 58 years, Penelope Karas Lockhart (Gilroy), his daughter, Sarah, sister, Patricia Wolfgang (New York), and brother, Jonathan Lockhart (Monterey), sisters-in-law Judith Karas and Rachel Holz Karas. Lynn is also survived by 2 nieces (Tara Holz and Celeste Holz), 3 nephews (Mel Wolfgang IV, Andrew Wolfgang, and Grant Holz) and 4 cats (Spunky, Bunny, MamaCat and Vacuum). Lynn was born in Parkersburg, WV to Brooks J Lockhart and Elizabeth Counts Lockhart, both deceased.

Lynn was a retired professor of math and served as football statistician for Gavilan College in Gilroy. He previously spent almost two decades teaching math at Britton Middle School in Morgan Hill, CA, where he also coached cross country. Lynn was an avid participant and follower of sports. He helped organize a variety of races with the Gavilan Joggers and Striders Running Club; served as Treasurer of his bowling league; and organized fantasy sports leagues among his friends and colleagues at Britton in the 1980s.

Lynn was also a music lover: from a childhood spent going to church for the purpose of getting to play the pipe organ after services, to playing in the Monterey High marching band, the UC Davis marching band and concert bands, to serving as an usher at the legendary Monterey Pop Festival, to enthusiastically attending his daughter's concerts and musical theater performances, and finally, serving on the Board of the South Valley Symphony. He was a proud Vietnam veteran of the U.S. Army.

Lynn will be remembered for his kindness, patience, sense of humor, and curiosity about how Keurig machines work. To honor Lynn's memory, and his strong belief in providing educational resources to historically marginalized groups, his family suggests contributions to the Gavilan College Educational Foundation ( 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. Gilroy, CA. 95020) or the South Valley Symphony ( P.O. Box 1347 | Gilroy, CA 95021-1347).

The family wishes to thank the staff of both Pacific Hills Manor and Redwood Hospice for the kindness and exceptional care Lynn received in his last months. He was in awe of their dedication and professionalism.

I’m so sorry to hear this sad news. I taught with Lynn at Britton and also remember his kindness and patience. Other good memories involve the noontime bridge game, duplicate bridge at Lynn’s and Penny’s, and a wonderful evening of bridge at Doc Rickey’s Lab on Cannery Row, thanks to the Lockharts’ membership. Lynn and Penny hosted another function there with a buffet on October 4, 1987 attended by many Britton colleagues. I remember that marvelously sunny day because it was my first date with my husband-to-be, Alex, and Lynn and Penny made it special.
My condolences to all of Lynn’s family. He will be missed.

I’m sad to hear of Lynn’s passing. I taught with him at Britton, and he coached me in assisting him coach the cross-country team for a few years. I admired his patience and wry sense of humor. His positive attitude affected all who he encountered, improving the self-esteem of so many of his students. I feel fortunate to have known Lynn.

I’m sorry to hear of Lynn’s passing. We were classroom neighbors at Britton for awhile, before he moved to Gavilan. He was such a nice person. I also have fond memories of the day he invited the Britton staff to a party at Doc Rickett’s lab in Monterey, as he was a member of the club that owns the building. Just one example of his kind spirit. My thoughts are with you, his family, as you process this loss. I hoe you find comfort in one another and in your own memories.

A dear friend from third and fourth grades. Jim Parker, Paul Taylor, Jim Dozier, and Lynn. Best friends for life. Wild indians running around the forests with homemade bows and arrows. Kicking over Pack Rat nests looking for treasure.
I am so sorry for your loss. Jim Dozier

I remember Lynn and Penny, from childhood events with Sarah. Sending much love and peace to Sarah, Penny, and the entire extended family at this time. You won't remember me, but your family/dad/husband certainly had an impact on my life when I was a child. Thank you for that.

Lynn and Penny have been friends for over 45 years. We have shared many experiences in common which created a bond. We remember Lynn as a runner, symphony supporter and dedicated math teacher at both Britton Middle School and Gavilan College. He was a real community contributor and we will miss him.
