Tommy Joyner Obituary

Tommy "Tom" C. Joyner September 9, 1938 – November 19, 2011 Tom Joyner, of Grand Junction, Colorado died after battling cancer to be with his Lord and Savior on November 19, 2011. Tom was born in Meridian, Mississippi to Jodie and Pauline (Merritt) Joyner. Tom remained in Meridian, graduating from Meridian High School in 1956 and then attended Meridian Junior College. After attending college, Tom proudly served in the Air National Guard. Tom met and married Patsey Wilson in 1960. They had two children, Tommy Jr., and Shawna. They later divorced. Tom remarried later to Renee Murphy of California, until her passing in 1998. Tom married Carol Lovato on January 12, 2000. Tom moved to Grand Junction and started Joyner Construction in 1974 , which thrived until he retired in 2002. Tom's work ethics and talents were admired by all. He practiced the true meaning of working hard from "sun up to sun down," a trait he inspired and instilled in his workers, family members and friends for generations. Tom enjoyed retired life by helping others, working on restoring tractors, and traveling with family and friends. He enjoyed his special trips to attend Southern Gospel concerts. He had a multitude of friends he acquired throughout his many years, and had his morning coffee group. Tom is certainly most known for his "large garden" of vegetables and flowers, that kept him busy, helping to feed others in need, and enjoyed keeping his wife entertained with canning from the labor of his love. Tom will also be remembered by his enthusiastic personal thoughts regarding the world economy and politics. Thus, ample opportunities for conversation to share with his friends and family. Being the true southern gentleman that he was, he did hold back on a few rare occasions. Tom is survived by his wife, Carol; son, Tommy Jr. of Grand Junction; brothers, Jimmie Joyner of Philadelphia, Mississippi, Ronnie Joyner of Union, Mississippi; sister, Rose Tucker of Union, Mississippi; and Betty Jean Burton of Philadelphia, Mississippi. His two step-daughters, Renee' (Scott) Perry of Grand Junction, and Connie (Kent) Flukey of Grand Junction; 17 grand children, and 3 great grandchildren. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Louie and Joseph and daughter Shawna McGoffin. Tom's personal philosophy was and should be shared by all and that was to share the love of the Lord with everyone, be kind, be gentle, and always lend a hand. The family requests any contributions be made to the Victory Life Missionary Fund, or to the Food Bank of The Rockies. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, November 29th, 2011 at Victory Life Chapel, 2066 Highway 50, Fruita, Colorado at 2:00 p.m.

Tom will be greatly missed. We loved him dearly. I'll always remember his kindness and such a gentle man to everyone. I loved to hear him pray over our food. His words at the end of the prayer was "forgive us when we are not pleasing to you". What a thought. He touched everyones lives that new him. May God Bless my wonderful aunt and his family. We love you! Evelyn and Jim George

In the last 11 years Sandra and I have learned to love a friendly, warm, personable "Uncle Tom" who gained entry into our hearts the first time we met him. The drives we took looking for old tractors here in the swampland of Louisiana will always be cherished. The laughter around the kitchen table and the Italian cream cakes consumed during your visits helped to entwine you in our life's fabric oh so tightly. I still have the adoption paper from your last visit (in crayons). So it is not goodbye - but just good night; we will see each other again. Neal and Sandra Andrews
