Walter Boigegrain Obituary

Walter J. Boigegrain
April 9, 1928 - May 3, 2016
Walter left this world May 3, 2016, from his Redlands home with peace and dignity at the age of 88 years.
He was born April 9, 1928, to Walter I. And Leone Harper Boigegrain and grew up in South Bend, Indiana. Upon graduating from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana in 1949, he married his wife of 66 years, Patricia. They moved to Denver, Colorado where he attended the Iliff School of Theology from which he received his Master in Divinity (1953) and Doctorate in Theology (1961) Degrees.
While at Iliff he was Assoc. Minister at Trinity United Methodist Church in Denver, and upon graduation served as Senior Minister at the United Methodist Churches in Rifle, and Westminister, Lakewood, Park Hill and Wheat Ridge in the Denver area. From 1972-78 he served as Superintendent for United Methodist Churches on the western slope and all of Utah. Upon retirement in 1992, Walt and Pat returned to Grand Junction and their lovely home over looking the river and city.
Wherever Walter was appointed, he was always actively engaged in the community and the greater church on local, state, and national levels. He loved his work and was frequently at the forefront of great movements from race relations, adequate housing, to mental health. Beyond his formal education, he was always learning, reading, reaching out and sharing. A great mentor, he will be remembered as "as a dynamic spiritual leader" and a "uniting force in conflict situations."
His passions were for history, the mountains, travel, and music. He especially enjoyed singing with the Schumann Singers for ten years.
Walter is survived by his wife, Pat; three children, Rebecca B. Martin of Arvada, CO; Walter Scot of Arvada, CO, and Barbara A. Boigegrain of Northbrook, IL. He was blessed with five special grandchildren, Justin and Jeremy Martin, and Courtney, Andrew and Amelia Warren.
A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, June 4, 2:00 p.m. at Wheat Ridge United Methodist Church, (38th and Wadsworth) in Wheat Ridge, Colorado and on Sunday, June 5, at 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Grand Junction.
A special thank you from the family to HopeWest Hospice and his team of Sherry, Kelsey, and Teresa; and Visiting Angels wonderful, Shauna. They all made such a difference in his final days.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Redlands United Methodist Church, 527 Village Way, Grand Junction, CO 81507 or to Iliff School of Theology Scholarship, 2323 E. Iliff Ave., Denver, CO 80210.

The first minister I can remember was Walter Boigegrain, at the First Methodist Church in Rifle. He taught us about being a Methodist and it was he who officiated when I joined the church. He and his wonderful, lovely wife, Pat, have been a fulfilled memory for me over the ensuing 60+ years. One of my dearest friends has been living next-door to Walt and Pat for many years "overlooking the river" so they have been back in reminiscences after long years away -- for them as well as for me. Both Walt and Pat have given so much to so many people, in many places, over so many years. Definitely God's gift to us all.
