Paul Steidlmayer

1942 - 2018

Paul was born in Colusa, California, on May 30, 1942. Paul was the son of Anthony and Mary Ann Steidlmayer and the brother of Toni Ann Roach, J. Peter Steidlmayer, Mark Steidlmayer (deceased) and Leo Steidlmayer.

Paul attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School and Colusa High School and after his second year at Colusa High School, he transferred to Bellarmine College Prep in San Jose, California.

At the age of 17, he entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). After his Seminary years he was ordained as a Catholic priest in the Jesuit Order. He continued his education and received an M.A. degree in Philosophy from Gonzaga University in 1966. He received a M.Div. from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkley, California in 1974. He went on to obtain a PH.D from Stanford University in 1975 and a Th.M. in Social Ethics from Harvard Divinity School in 1976.

Paul taught at several Jesuit Universities including Santa Clara University and Loyola University in Los Angeles California. His Jesuit assignments also took him to mainland China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Latin America and Rome. His book "Social Justice Ministry" was published in 1984.

In the late 1980's, Paul separated from the Jesuit Order and continued his professional career by accepting a position with the State University of New York at Binghamton, New York. He continued to teach at Binghamton until retirement.

After retiring Paul made his home in Manhattan, New York until 2 years ago when, because of health issues, he moved back to California.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated for Paul August 30, 2018, at 1:00 pm, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. A private family burial will be at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colusa.
