Alvin C. Halfpap, 83, of Boone, IA passed away on Tuesday afternoon, February 27, 2018 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, IA.
A celebration of Al's life will be held at 10AM, Saturday, March 3, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church in Boone, IA. Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM, Friday, March 2, 2018 also at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Linwood Park Cemetery, Boone, IA.
Al 'Bunny' was born April 12, 1934 in Belmond, IA to Alvin and Fannie (Bruns) Halfpap. He was a 1952 graduate of Belmond High School. He worked with the Chicago Great Western Railroad from 1954-1956 and was drafted into the Army and stationed in Germany from 1956-1958. He was honorably discharged the day Elvis arrived. Once stateside, he worked for the Chicago Great Western, Chicago Northwestern and Union Pacific Railroads as a Train Dispatcher, retiring in 1994.
In 1961, Al married Kathryn Kaye Thompson in Nora Springs, IA and then resided in Oelwein, IA where two children were born: Tom and Carrie. Railroad transfers also led him to work in Mason City, IA, Boone, IA and Chicago, IL. In 1992, Kaye passed away. In 1995, Al married Mary Johnston and resided in Boone.
Al loved antique cars and was an avid race fan -- especially watching sprint cars in Knoxville, IA with his son, Tom. He was a member of the Early Ford V-8 Club of America (Central Iowa Region), Antique Auto Club of America (AACA, Tall Corn Region) and member of the First United Methodist Church in Boone.
Those left to honor Al's memory include his wife Mary Johnston; children Tom (Deb and Patience) Halfpap of Mason City, IA; Carrie (Jack) Topp of Newton, IA; step-children Nancy (Dave) Clawson of Panora, IA; David (Nancy) Johnston of Cottage Grove, MN; Sue (Tim) Fried of Lino Lakes, MN; John (Linda) Johnston of White Bear Lake, MN; 12 step-grandchildren and one step-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Kaye and sister Dorothy.
Memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church in Boone, Israel Family Hospice House in Ames and the Boone Area Humane Society.
