Daniel Fredrick Ballard was born July 7, 1947, at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City, a son of Earnie Fredrick and Veronica Florence (Heck) Ballard, and died Thursday (July 28, 2005) at Methodist Hospital in Rochester.

He received his education and graduated from Immaculate Conception School in Charles City in 1968. He attended North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City where he met Brenda Marsh. Dan entered the United States Navy in July 1968, where he underwent training at Great Lakes Naval Station.

On May 2, 1970, Dan and Brenda were united in marriage at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene. They relocated to Portsmouth, Va. where he was stationed on the USS Columbus CG-12. He later served on the USS John F. Kennedy CVA-67, USS Francis Marion LPA-249, USS Yellowstone AD-41, and USS Vulcan AR-5. At various times he served with the SIMA (Sea Industrial Maintenance Association), and shore patrol.

Following his retirement on Oct. 31, 1988, he and his family returned to Greene where they made their home. He was currently employed at Menards in Mason City. He was an active member of the Greene Volunteer Fire Department where he was a certified fire inspector, fire fighter I, haz-mat ops level, and weather spotter. Daniel was also a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Greene, Fr. John Naumann Council of the Knights of Columbus, and Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Brenda, of Greene; two daughters: Michelle (James) Anderson of Greene, and Kendra (Douglas) Mennen of Mason City; 3½ grandchildren: Elizabeth, Thomas Daniel, Heather and a baby due in the fall; his mother, Veronica "Ronnie" Ballard, of Floyd; three sisters: Barb (John) Pint of Mitchell, Bonnie (Larry) Pint of Osage, and Linda (Dave) Hennagir of Griffith, Ind.; and several nieces and nepews.

Dan was preceded in death by his father, Earnie Ballard, on Oct. 11, 1973; and an infant grandchild in 2002.

Brenda, Kendra and Michele;

I am praying for you and I know you can feel God's arms around you during this time. Uncle Daniel was an extraordinary man and I loved him like a father. He was like a father to me when my father was gone. I truly felt honored to have shared my life with him, to be blessed to have the same birthday and to God for bringing us together all those many years ago. I will truly miss him but I feel him all around me.

Thanks Uncle Daniel for allowing me to share your birthday and for sharing it with Kaitlyn as well. I have a lot to live up to to be like you.

I love you all!

Kathy your long lost third daughter.

Brenda, Michele, Kendra and families; Just wanted you to know what a joy it has been knowing Dan. I can honestly say I have never met anyone like him. He was such a good friend, husband and father. Our lives are truly better for having had him for a friend. He will truly be missed by everyone who knew him. I still carry such fond memories of my trip all those years ago-before any babies-to see you in Virginia when I turned 21 and Dan took us to see the "sights".

Well, Dan, thanks for the memories!!!

You are all, always in our thoughts and prayers.

God Bless-Love,

Arlis and Charlie
