Darrell Fisher Obituary

Darrell Ervin Fisher

January 4, 1935 - September 30, 2024

Darrell Ervin Fisher, 89, died September 30th at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. The son of Ervin LeRoy Fisher and Ruth (Stratford) Fisher, Darrell was born January 4th, 1935 in Mason City, IA. He was married to his dear wife Susan Dee Ward Fisher (died 2022) for 62 years. The Fishers lived in Mason City from 1970-2021, prior to moving to Rochester.

Fisher was a 1953 graduate of Mason City High School, Mason City Junior College (NIACC) in 1955, Grinnell College (1957), the University of Iowa College of Medicine (1961), and in 1962 began serving on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor for 3 years as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy. After moving to Rochester, MN in 1965 and completing his residency in 1970 at the Mayo Clinic, he began a 30-year relationship with the Surgical Associates of Mason City (Mason City Clinic) as an orthopedic surgeon. Fisher performed literally thousands of total hip and total knee procedures during his career in Mason City. He regularly led arthritis seminars locally and spent time one month per year doing mission medical work abroad, including in St. Lucia and Kenya.

His love of music led to membership with the Mason City Municipal Band for 40 years and the First Presbyterian Church Choir for 50 years. He was a long time member of the Mason City Rotary Club (where he was a Paul Harris Fellow), and received alumni awards from Mason City High School and Grinnell College, served on the NIACC Foundation Board of Directors, and in 2000 he earned the International Rotary Four Avenues of Service Award. He often said that his own life's mission was Rotary's motto, "Service above Self". The Fishers were named as Grand Marshals of the North Iowa Band Festival in 2016.

He was preceded in death by his sisters Marilyn Scoville and Jeanette Kloberdanz. He is survived by son Mark (Highland Park, IL), daughter Becky Olson (Rosemount, MN), son Brent (and wife Stephanie, Rochester, MN), and grandsons Max, Luke, Jack, Sam and Mason.

A service will be planned for the spring of 2025 in Mason City. Any donations can be made in Darrell's name to the First Presbyterian Church 100 S. Pierce Mason City, IA 50401.

I remember meeting your dad when we made home an Honorary GRR member. He had the best smile. I am so glad you had more time with him. I am sorry for your loss.
