Dorothy Mealy Obituary

Dorothy (Dottie) Ann Mealy

November 7, 1929 - October 30, 2024

Our beloved mom, Dorothy (Dottie) Ann Mealy passed away on October 30, 2024. She was born, the second of four children, on November 7, 1929, in Charles City, Iowa to Louis Henry and Florence Elizabeth (Schumacher) Multhauf.

The family moved to Mason City, Iowa in 1944. She attended Holy Family High School. She received her undergraduate degree from Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa and attended Mount Mercy School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, graduating in 1952. Dottie married her high school classmate John Jerome (Jerry) Mealy on January 13, 1955, in Mason City, IA. Together they raised six children.

Dottie often shared many words of wisdom with her loved ones, as well as her love of nature and trees, and her vast knowledge as a nurse which included numerous Latin phrases. She exemplified healthy living by enjoying hiking, figure skating, gardening and reading the latest research on health and wellness.

Dottie was a dedicated nurse taking on many roles throughout her career. She had incredible inner strength and sensitivity to patients' needs, having experienced painful treatments for osteomyelitis as a teenager. She always looked on the bright side of things and encouraged all to face difficult situations with positive energy.

Her last position was as a nurse health educator at Mayo Clinic. A highlight of her career was attending and participating in the Stevens Point Wellness Conference. She loved to discuss healthy living with everyone she met.

Dottie was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Jerry Mealy, her son, Michael Mealy, her brother Donald Multhauf, her sisters Geraldine Tammel and Mary Lou Gottschalk and her dearly loved grandmother Christina Lutz Schumacher.

She is survived by her five children, Jeanne Mealy (John Stanley) of St Paul, MN, Chris (Diane) Mealy of Portland, OR, Susan (Bruce) Knutson of Madison, WI, Tom Mealy (fiancée, Allison Bennett) of Gilbert, AZ and Teresa Mealy of Verona WI; ten grandchildren: Jonathon (Nicole) Mealy, Grace (Paul) Moore, Sophie (Zach) Kamps, Andrew (Miyeon) Mealy, Ryan Mealy, Anna Knutson (Kyle Smith), Joseph Mealy, Logan (Kristie) Mealy, Morgan Mealy (fiancée, Claire Hawkins), Kevin Mealy; seven great grandchildren: Autumn, Ariel and Emery Mealy, Oliver and Rose Moore, Elsie Kamps and Landon Mealy.

Dottie leaves a legacy of love as a mother, a dear friend and a nurse. She will be deeply missed.

A Celebration of Life will take place in Mason City, IA next spring.
