Joann Wanda was born Feb. 18, 1934 in Volga, S.D., the daughter of John and Manda (Warnes) Vander Waal. She was baptized and confirmed in the First Lutheran Church in Volga. She graduated from Volga High School with the Class of 1952. After graduation she was employed at Lynn Studio in Sioux Falls and Tupper Pharmacy in Volga, S.D.
Joann was united in marriage to Robert W. Mock on Oct., 14, 1961, at First Lutheran Church in Volga, S.D. To that union two children were born, Richard and Debra. During her husbands career with the railroad she lived in Wall Lake, Mason City, Boone, and Chicago, Ill. They retired to Clear Lake in 1996.
Joann enjoyed bowling, playing cribbage and especially spending time with her grandchildren. She loved music and singing in church; and she saw that her children took piano lessons. She was supportive of her children's and grandchildren's musical endeavors. She also enjoyed watching sports, especially basketball. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her husband, Robert; daughter Debra (Mark) Block, of Ankeny; son Richard (Tina) Mock, of Forest City; and five grandchildren, Manda Clark, Alex Thompson, Anna Thompson, Elijah Mock and Georgia Mock; sisters Doris Okland, of Plymouth, Minn., and Avis (George) Rowbotham, of Bellevue, Wash.; brother John Vander Waal, of Albert Lea, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews and cousins.
Joann was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters.
